Looks like i'll have to fabricate some after all. What gauge steel did you use?
I'm not aware of the steps you are talking about?

Hey Mike
I used 12 Ga cold roll steel. I had some c channel fabricated and just used some of that. Go to any rv store and look at steps. I believe you can get replacement steps that can bolt on. If not You can rebuild the step area like I did.......

Thanks Javier,
I picked up some 12ga cold rolled steel sheet now I have to figure out how cut and bend it. How did you do yours?
I'll go by my local RV Place and check them out. What do you think about an aluminum double step off a 70's Airstream? I can pick one up at a great price.
Appreciate all your help and advice.

I had mine bent to spec at a local metal yard. Since it was left over chanel I just traced the shape of the outrigger and cut it myself. As for the step outrigger I took the new outriggers and cut them to size then welded them on.

Looking good Mike!!
If you can get that step it will pobablly work with the new step outrigger. I tried to get a step from a salvaged trailer but the owner kept screwing around.

If you can get the double step at a great price grab it. If you don't need it I will gladly pick it up and compensate you for your efforts.

Mike, a word of advice.. make sure the new step is in the correct spot. Often modern steps are not the same dimension as the older ones and since the outriggers are gone your reference is also. I have seen it done a few times where the step does not center on the door opening. Fortunately, I have not made this error because I picked up on others doing it. The tendency seems to be to have more step on the hinge side of the door. Not sure why it is toward the hinge, but I have seen this a couple of time.

Mike you can re build that step quite easily, I did with no problem. I only had to cut two notches in the new outriggers to lock the step when it was in the open position.

I may end up using the old step but I sure thought it'd be cool to have the aluminum double step installed. I'm short some parts for the newer steps anyways.
I think the old step mounted in the new outriggers will be good.

My man, you own a 1959. There is very little "cooler". You have stepped into, what is in my PROFESSIONAL OPINION, the best era of Airstreams.

Very nice to hear from such a professional as your self, especially since my first Airstream was a 77 Sovereign. I dig the 70's era trailers but not to crazy about the windows and frame issues.
Anyways very cool to hear I have a keeper and I think I'll keep the original step.
Thanks!
Mike.

Hey Javier
How did you go about cutting out the slot in each outrigger that the step retracts into?
Yours looks factory.
Thanks
Mike

That sounds easier than trying to cut the slots.
Thanks Frank

Do you weld? It is an easy transformation. A cut off wheel and a welder is all it takes. Out of Doors mart has them.
I know you can handle it...
BTW Tio Frank's green chile sauce was great, but the red is even better! Thank you so much for sending it to me. I will now be mail ordering it!
I spend a ton of money importing stuff from New Mexico. It might just be time to move there.

I just started welding so I'm going to give it my best shot. Thanks for the info.
I noticed on your blog how much you liked the Hatch chiles, figured you'd like Tio Franks sauces as well.
New Mexico's winters sure aren't as harsh as Maryland's.
We love New Mexico and Hatch is only 100 miles away. You need to eat at Sparky's the next time you're in Hatch.

desertair,
After I made my outriggers I cut out the slots with a jig saw with a 32 teeth per inch bi-metal blade. Drilled out the top and bottom position with a 3/8 hole saw.
After the cut was made clean up with a die grinder or a file. You can knock that slot out quicker than I can type how to do it.
Good luck
Jack
