Door seals

An abbreviated work day. I got the main and inner main door seals on. I do use 8008 3M adhesive an addition to the sticky back on the seal. I used the same seal for the rear hatch as the main door. It looks tight. The piano finish floor is next.

So.. did you break down and drill out the riveted seal you installed a few days ago?

door and seals

Hi Tim! Damnest thing. My expert friend and I brainstormed the problem...and it looked like the hinge had been "tweaked" somehow. I am guessing it was me pushing the door closed in an attempt to compress the new seals. So we went at the hinges. I could see where both the inner door and outer had rub marks on their frames. Now, if you have not looked at the fabrication and geometry of the hinge....do so. I am trying to find some more info....GOT ANY? The best I can find on my own trials is using a C clamp to get at the inner door adjustments. The good old hardwood/hammer on the outer. Then just work it a little at a time. I cannot , at all, figure out why Airstream used both rivets AND screws for the hinges. That may be the adjustment answer.

be sure to just check the lock mechanism itself--i had to take mine apart, lube, and adjust. for the longest time i thought i needed to tweak the hinges too. they ended up being fine-- i was tweaking all kinds of stuff till i found the obvious. it's easy to be fooled when you can't see through aluminum and the inner and outer door gasket from VTS works great once everything's lined up well. these doors can shut like a european car door if you're patient... and get lucky.

Thanks for the tweak info.

Tweaking in progress. Lock has been apart and cleaned/greased. Tomorrow.....?

Unbelievable

Well, it is something I don't want to believe. The pecan tree sap residue that covered my freshly polished Bubble apparently is quite acidic. All those tiny flecks have etches all the skin, my polished Worthingtons and my new polished battery box. Bonnet with G6 and my usual mashed up green bar hardly touches the damage. It will require compounding and polish all over again.

Oh dear. I usually park under my parents pecan trees when we tow over to visit. So far we have not used our polished '63 and now I know not to park there.

THANKS!

Was it waxed after polish or is that not done?

ruined polish job

No! I don't use wax on a polished one. I do use Turtle wash/wax for the up keep during the year or two befor next polish. The sap damage is akin to bird poop staining.

Just curious as to why you don't wax? Obviously you don't store it inside.....
