'58 Sovereign of the Road Trekking North

Wahoo! I picked up my "New to me" 58 Sovereign of the Road on Friday night from RichardT's, and departed Richard's Bat Cave early Saturday morning. Bat Cave is real, and we spent the evening Friday night looking at all Richard's trailers, and just meeting for the first time, had the "free to forum members" ice cream and bought a cool Bat Cave T-Shirt. I departed early Saturday for Quantico (I have to work this week away) and made it all the way to Henderson, NC where I pulled the rig into a CampGround...that's right, I'm staying in her...I've been in rougher sleeping areas....the ranger love her. On the way, I stopped off at Out of Doors Airstream and the owner said he's never seen a SOTR, so he got to see it...he had a 58 Flying Cloud in the yard, a cousin to the SOTR, so I checked it out.

Here is a picture in Boucksville State Recreation Area. On Sunday, I pulled the rest of the way to Stafford, Va, where I am resting now for the week since I have to work away from home this week here in Quantico. On Friday, I will be pulling the rest of the way to central NY. This fall, this thing will be making the trek to Plattsburgh to Colin's at GSM Vehicles for the rebuild. Enjoy.

I had a great time RichardT! Thanks for everything....and oh, by the way, those brakes are awesome on this thing...definately new as they stop the Chevy!

Light weight

Ya, and less than 4000 lbs too! Tows like a dream. Noticed at Richard's that the road side bunk at one time did have a twin, but it is missing. At least I have one to match.....love the curved bunk bed. More good pictures when I get home where the good camera is.

Nothing but a thing

I enjoyed them alot...reminded me of being in the mountains in California. The truck did just fine pulling up, and the trailer brakes worked great going down...just took my time...

Now through the little hills in PA and I'll be glad to be home come Friday.

SOTR went further north on Saturday

Well, the SOTR is now up at Colin's at his shop , GSM Vehicles, where it will begin to bo operated on sometime early this winter. I've posted pictures at my blog: http://sweetsovereign.blogspot.com so that everyone can follow along. Without Colin I never would have gotten the inside pieces out (boy there is alot to the inside of an Airstream) since he came down on Friday night to help and to pick up our new to us Vagabond trailer - we know it's not an Airsrteam, but it is so cool. We are still up in the Air on what we are doing with it! Enjoy the blog and give me some feedback. Right now, the SOTR will be getting a new floor, inside wiring, new insulation, and then all new Zolatone.

Over a year later

We updated the photos on the blog:

Sweet Sovereign of the Road and next Friday (our next scheduled recovery date) we travel up north to bring it back down to central NY.

What do you all think?

Is that the same trailer? The exterior looks great! I'll have to check out the inside shots too.

Great work!!!!

Sure is!

It is the same trailer. The interior is now to get underway, all new wiring, insulation, zolatone, and marmoleum. The interior woodwork is being restored as we speak. Thanks for looking!

That "Chirstmas as a six year old" Feeling?

Now here is a guy who's got that "can't wait for Christmas" feeling!! He knows what he wanted from the sears catalog, has circled it with red marker, asked Santa for it at the JC Penny twice, and is just about to jump out of his skin... Bummer that Santas sled is tied in bad weather

Better have the wife put some towels down in the rig just in case you melt when you walk through the door.... or at least some aspirin on hand in case you have a heart attack....

Looks awesome Rob, can't wait to see it in person... This will defintiely be a highlight on the vintage open house tour

Is this the one you're renting out?

I know, just ask Zoe'

Tell me about it Doug...I keep begging to drive to Plattsburgh as a boy would do to be allowed to open a present early on Christmas eve. This will be the new storage area for the rest of the winter with ability to work on it inside. It even has a complete truck wash on the other end for internal leak testing - plus I'll wash it off once I get it home. In one end of this build is Precision Built Tops, specializing in custom counter tops...how fitting - I'll need a couple of those soon enough.

Thanks Richard Y

Yup, the first post of this thread is at your place - seems like a while ago - but I still wear my Bat Cave t-shirt proudly. Yup, the SOTR is looking beautiful...but now the "Make it look original inside" interior work begins. Thanks! Ya know, without you, we'd be $25k (rough estimate) richer - and we'd still have a 1985 (not even close to being built as good as the 50s were) 34' Limited that in no way could possibly look as good as this one does!

Nobody said this hobby is cheap! but the first time we pull into a gas station, it all will be worth it!
