A friend is giving me a 1958 Airstream Soverign....sight unseen. I have rebuilt a 1966 Aristocrat, and have built a Teardrop trailer and several utility trailers. Anyone have any photos and / or advice for my new "gift" ? I will undoubtedly gut the trailer and start over with wiring, plumbing, flooring, etc. Need advice and photos...thanks to anyone responding to logcabin655global.net Rick in Vacaville, Ca. (west of Sacramento,Ca.)

Hello logcabin655 -- Welcome to the Forums! Your "find" deserves a thread of its own and I have moved your posts accordingly. We'll hope for many more stories and pictures!

What are you undertaking? See posts 7 & 8 here.

Rob from Welcome to the Frontpage - The Vintage Airstream Podcast has threads on his SOTR here and here. Note the link to his restoration blog. Listening to theVAP is just plain fun. I know Rob has really had to scrounge eBay and many many vintage trailer resellers for parts!

Another example of a period restoration still underway - http://www.airforums.com/forums/f91/its-girl-31084.html.

Complete gut jobs need to be aware that the weight you put back in should not be much more than that for the cabinetry, etc, that you removed. Frames were fairly light back then and don't have much additional capacity.

Welcome to the forums!

Congrats on your new to you airstream! Wow! I sure hope you do something great for your friend! Wonderful gift!

A 58 will likely have some different issues than we had with our 1963, our 55 is still in pieces... but you might check my husband's thread he has lots of pics of what he went through and lots of how-to's!

If you gut the trailer and decide to "modernize" the interior parts, beds, cabinets, appliances, etc. Before you throw them away, be sure and post them in the classifieds! Many folks are looking for items that just might be in your "trash"! Often times patterns are all that are needed! Other items that are not so clean, or that likely not working appliance may have the one part someone needs! Even knobs and sliders, etc. So if you decide you want to rid yourself of the old stuff, post pics in the classifieds and you might be surprised on the responses you receive!

Good luck and post pictures soon!
