InsideOut said "I am proud to announce we have adopted a 1956 Safari double w/bunk today!!!! She weighs in at a whooping 2730 lbs and is 22' long. The interior is "all there" and the outside, while never polished is very straight and has no major damage - just some black rub-marks. We adopted her from the grand-daughter of the original owner. We have named her "Lily Bird" after grandma but she will go by "Birdie". She does need some TLC...but I'm ready to take on another project ~ and as Fred said, she's "...just waiting to be released from the white paint jail". We'll do our best to bring her back to her original glory"
This is PRECISELY (I know - sp?) why I added the 2nd shed are on my horse barn - I hope that someday this trailer (or her sister) will find it's way to a new and loving (if poor) home with me. Bee-uti-ful find.

Reason: repair quote
shari, great work and it's moving along. it's been awhile since i've checked your thread last.
one comment i'll add about keeping the shell ON, you absolutely made the right decision. i took my shell off over a year ago and it's still off. if i had known then what i know now, i would have definately left the shell on. my frame was in great shape and i would have been able to put in the new cross members, tanks, and other framing issues with the shell on. sure it's a little more work but i frequently dread the day i'm actually going to have to put the shell back on and try and line everything up....
are you out of the snow yet?

Thanks David...that's encouraging. I think we made the right decision...at least for us and our limited work area constraints. Snow is off the ground Thank goodness!), but it did the sloppy snow/rain mix last week and still freezes at night, high was only in the low 40's yesterday...kinda tough to get moving out there for a full day's work. Today was near 70...much better!
Most likely, it won't be 'done' by August...however, we will be taking it to Bozeman in June...but we'll have both trailers so we'll be able to make do with the kitchen and all in Maxwell....Birdy will probably still be a hard tent.
We haven't decided yet which trailer to take to Salida Richard...it is a dry camping rally, so that may be roughing it a bit too much. We are going to check out the site over Memorial Day...I'll have to wait and see what it's really like before we decide...and see what progress we can make between International and RMVAC. Everything always takes longer than we plan and expect...
I'll try & post pictures this week...gotta finish up the taxes first ~

A Chris Ledoux fan? Or just a fan of cowboys driving Cadillacs?
utee94 - Maybe a tad of both, tho I don't think today's Cadillacs are very 'hat friendly' nor would they make a very good tow vehicle for my 30 footer.
The song was a favorite of a local buddy at an outdoor live music venue in Wimberley on Friday nights. Almost always one of his picks when his turn came around. I didn't know Chris had recorded it tho. Its also a fairly good way to describe my nature. Spent almost all of my adult working life in the UK, N. & E. Africa & 3 different 'dunes' around Arabia. Now I'm glad to be back home in Texas & seeing my own country.
Good luck with your AS search. DONOT compromise your goal. She really is out there, just waiting for you. Compromise is NEVER good for me - without exception, I always regret it afterwards.
This was Birdie's backside last Saturday...then this evening. Tomorrow Mr.InsideOut is starting the electrical...I will be installing the taillights and license plate light then riveting on the drip cap and shaving the rivets. Then her "hinie" will be ready to go ~
1) Removed entire window & frame
2) Rescreened the inner window
3) Cleaned all the silicone, parabond, putty tape & #@*&% off
4) Got most of the ancient sticker remnants
5) Reglazed the window with new gaskets
6) Polished the frame
7) Reinstalled everything...whew!
The blue tape was there to keep the rain/snow out this week. Supposed to be nice tomorrow...so I should be able to get her buttoned up.
It was a busy weekend!

This week we finished up the lights, so they are ready to be installed tomorrow. They were caked with dirt and old cork gaskets and rust so I stripped them out, cleaned them up then repainted them and polished the chrome trim. We also put new light sockets in and polished the lenses but one was chipped so we ended up ordering new ones from VTS...they are GREAT! I'll post a pic later that shows them all put together...

It is. While I stayed home scrapping silicone...the boys got to go out & play with the big machines! Fred and Rob had to cut up the aluminum they bought to replace the streetside panel on Birdy, Maxwell & Fred's '64 GT. That's a 10' shear a friend of Fred's has. Pretty cool and, extra bonus...they both came back with all 10 fingers still attached!
The weekend of May 8-10 we will be starting on the two GT's...then tackle Birdy if we still have time.
I will definately hang around for this! Right now we are planning on all on us drilling out the old rivets, then after the new panels are drilled we'll tag team putting them on...on the GT's we will use Olympics and shave them. On the Safari we'll be bucking...Lot's of pictures to follow after this one! Smile Fred!!!

Woohoo! We got all the running lights, brake lights & the license plate light installed on the back, the window hardware installed on the rear window and the Marinco power connector is ready to go. We also installed the dripcap and figured out all the interior electrical wiring. We got all the electrical bits & pieces so we hope to get the wiring done during this next week. Next weekend is "panel replacement time"...oh boy!
It was after dark when we finished up with the drip cap...so no pics yet. I sure hope we eliminated our one and only pesky leak back there...if not, we have no idea where it's coming from, the next rain will tell. Our fingers will be crossed until then!
