Bill,

Were you able to get both pieces out the standard entry door?

Steve,

Yes, one was four feet wide and one four and one half. Since I have a 29 foot liner. The length was about ten feet and twelve feet. I did not have to roll them since they were narrower than the height of the door. Not easy to move a four and one half by twelve foot piece but possible without rolling.

I removed the big ceiling piece from a 58 26' by holding it up as a big U shape. One person on each end. It came out easily that way.

Two people can do that, I was working alone and I think Steve is also.

As you see in this picture it is bent in half. You think it will fit out of the door? It won't flex left or right in that position.

It seems unlikly that they would buck those together in the trailer so look for a way to get the end started out the door.

Steve, one idea. How about two or three of those cinch along straps (like you use to hold down tarps in a p/u truck). Put them around one end, and get it as close to a circle as you can... cinch that end as tight as you can, then go to the middle, and then tighten that part, and then the other end. The straps will hold the section you just worked on.. then they'll hold the whole thing like a big burrito.

Wow, you're working fast on that trailer!

I have been told that they were originally brought into the trailer through the front or back window opening before the windows were installed. I think I will try the "U" shaped removal before removing the windows.

Mark, if the "U" doesn't work, I will be using the cinch straps while carrying it out the window.

Steve, First... I am impressed that you got over the hesitation and you are at it. Keep going brother, I totally believe in you.
I think you should drill out that front window and when your neighbor comes home offer him a beer, then once he has on sip, say hey give me a hand a second. It will roll up and go right out the window just as it went in back in 1953. The damaged exterior panel is no big deal either. Just call up Diane at AirParts inc and she will ship you out a new piece of 2024 T3 .032. You will have a pattern to work from and it will be easy as pie. Nothing but a little time and a small wad of cash. You do have a money tree growing in your back yard right? Money well spent if you ask me.
Once again, I am impressed how you jumped in and went to it. It is looking really ugly now but soon it will start looking pretty. Keep going Brother.

Ceiling

Hey Steve,

When I took mine out, I rolled it up like a cigar and strapped it with rope. With a little fiddling, I was able to get it out the door without to much of a headache. . It was pretty easy to roll up in a long tube.

HTH,

Doug

My plan for the day is to throw stripper on a few panels, and shop vac what I can of the interior with the skin still in. Then I will remove my tools from inside, and organize my parts from VTS. When Amy gets home, we will attempt the U shaped removal. Collin is going to his grandmother's later today, so I should have time for work. I do need to get the AC unit off the roof, and need to decide what I will put in place of it to cover the hole for the time being. Also on replacing my panel, I wonder if I need to do this before I mess with the floor/frame.

Oh I forgot, my father in law works at a chemical plant and is getting me some N-Methyl Pyrrolidone. This stuff strips paint unbelievably. Sure it is a carcinogen if exposed too long (Like years), but it works!

Since the ceiling is still in there, I have done some skin power washing, some vacuuming in the interior, and wanted to mess with the dent in the rear quarter panel. I wasn't sure how to handle the dent. It is on a seam, and not able to be pulled out with a suction cup. I went inside, and just gave a gentle push to the dent. A thunderous "BANG" rang out in the trailer. The dent was gone. Thankfully it was a small dent.

That's one of the benefits of removing interior panels!

Looks good ~

That's great! Definitely one of the great benefits of pulling out those interior panels. The aluminum WANTS to go back to its old position. Sometimes it just needs a nudge.

It's out!!!!

Ceiling is out.

Folded it into a U shape and pulled it out by myself. I doubt it goes back in as easily. My neighbors must think I am a hoosier with all this sheet metal in the back yard, and two trailers.

Steve

On Edit....Is this alclad able to be polished on both sides?

Anyone and everyone...please be on the look out for a yale deadbolt and door knob from a 50's trailer.....or let me know what would work as a replacement. I am likely going to have to rebuild the door, and my current knob and deadbolt are toast.

Steve,

I purchased two round knobs from a local locksmith for my Liner. I am looking for a deadbolt also, since I have two doors. I have looked at antique hardware stores, but not found the deadbolt as yet. You might see if there are some nearby you.

If you find a source, let me know and I will let you know also.

Bill

Bill,

Any idea if there were more of those round knobs at the store you got yours at?

Since I am rebuilding the door, I need to find a latch system for the door in a door too. My pieces are broken or missing.

Through the looking glass

I decided to mess with windows today. What a major PITA that I wasn't exactly prepared for. Some of the parts I need are not available from Vintage Trailer Supply, so I am stuck waiting for a trailer from 1953 to be destroyed and parted out.

Anyone have a source for Hehr Standard windows?

Window #1 out and ready to take apart

Window #1 disassembled.

I need a cross bar for this window. PM me if you know where some are.

As usual, more info on the blog.

Steve
