The '55 is in my neighbor's garage right now and it fit easily with his 9' door. I do not plan on installing a roof air conditioning unit so at least for this model of trailer, I should be in good shape. Good advise though about measuring everything carefully. You are right, I don't want to go to all of that work and be too short by a few inches!!!! The opener and track would be above the door track height so that won't be an issue.

Garage Lift

I'm sorry for the lack of progress and/or communication. All is well in Iowa and as they say "a picture is worth a 1000 words." The 55 will now fit in my back 20' x 30' garage. The interior ceiling height was 8'. Now it is 11' and I'll be installing a 9' overhead door as soon as it comes in. This was no easy task but it is done! Now comes the much easier task of installing the exterior sheathing, house wrap and re-siding. Yeah! Now I'll be able to work on the AS any time of year in any weather and more importantly, have a place to keep in out of the weather once restored.

A special thanks to Kenny, Dad, Bob, Zac, Matthew, Bruce and Brad.

That's fantastic, Barry. I'd been wondering how things were going for you.

And I, too, am jealous.

Barry you are amazing and passionate - to raise the roof for vintage Airstream.
Can't wait to see your progress on '55 now that you will have a warm, dry place to work.

You know it was a tough process but as with most things, the preparation was 90% of the work. Once all of the bracing and blocks were in place, the actual lifting only took an hour and a half or so. All of the lifting was done with six 8 ton bottle jacks. We would go up 4" and slide in another block and then lower it onto the block and place another block under the jack and keep repeating the process. There was no wind but the building was still moving a bit at that height before we got the 3' walls in place. I have some new photos of the progress over the last couple of days that I'll post tonight when I get home from work!

Very cool garage lift. How tall is the top of the garage door, 9 ft?

Inside ceiling height is 11' and the overhead door opening is 9'. You never know, I could still put in a 10' door sometime down the road. My wife is very supportive and I don't want to find out where that blurry line is........

From the floor to the top of the open right now it is 10' 5" or so but I am going to put in a filler/header so the opening is a standard size of 9' which will look a bit more "residential." The 9' insulated door is ordered and will be here either this Friday or next.

More Garage Progress

Here are a couple more pictures of the garage lifting progress. The sheathing and house wrap have been installed and my dad moved the light switches down so I don't have to jump up to reach them. He also moved 4 of the outlets down 3' so they are in the same position as before the lift. I hope to get a bunch of the siding on over the weekend to keep the neighbors happy.
