13 panel

I was assuming you'd be using a 13 panel design. Therefore flat end pieces would work. However it would be labor intensive to make those nice finished seams.

Why not chop down a longer one?

Why couldn't you use basically any big one?

I should think you'd be able to find an old Sovereign or some other long one that's had the side bashed in. Cut 14' or whatever out of the middle of a Sovereign and rivet it back together. Make yourself up a nice new frame and call it good to go.

Heck, I bet you could get one for free that way. Who'd want one with the side caved in?

I remember seeing along I-70 in eastern Ohio an old Airstream sitting along the south side of the road, in a junkyard. It's clearly visibile from the interstate, out in the middle of nowhere. I saw it sitting there when I came back from Jackson Center. It had no wheels, and was laying on a bit of an angle, in the middle of a bunch of old junk cars. I bet you could find one like that and get it for dirt cheap. As long as it's got a title, you shouldn't have to change a thing on that. A '66 Airstream is still a '66 Airstream to the DMV.

It looks to me like the Bubble is a short Flying Cloud except for the door that opens the "wrong" way. Good things often take much time and lots of effort but are worth it.

Looking more carefully I see that one might get away with just replacing or maybe even reversing those thin strips on the sides of the door. No big deal.

I think if I were to do this I would opt to make two breaks, rivet back together and move the axle...I think. If one took 6 feet out to the left of the door that would put the door about in the center of the curb side. It certainly would be further from a Bubble then but a custom FC I guess. I have no understanding of what that would mean for the interior layout.

If it is near you and the hauler charges $1.40 per loaded mile then the price here becomes $3500. Right? I have seen this one and may bid on it: eBay Motors: AIRSTREAM TRAVEL TRAILER 1955 FLYING CLOUD 22 FT N/R (item 190079074037 end time Feb-12-07 13:44:00 PST)

I have some better pics I took yesterday. Does anyone have images of the frame down under the radiused corners or know if the frame follows those radii?

Be careful

Since you are so close to this one, I suggest you go look at it before you buy. It's been on and off ebay for some time now and I don't think it's in very good shape. You may have to trailer it to get it home.
But as for the condition, if your going to cut it in 2 and do a major chop shop on it, then I guess this is a good choice. Cheap, old and in need of some major repairs.
Good luck! and keep everyone informed of your progress if go make the attempt.

Doorgunner, a good friend of my son's is an arranger of shipments worldwide so I could ask him to get me a quote. What kind of shape is that one in? It is in CA right? I think it would be 104" X 26' X 7'6".

that's been on ebay atleast three times i know of for the same price.

as a flying cloud owner, i'd hate to see one be chopped up and basically a dead S/N. flying clouds are not that common, especially the 13 panel ones. the one on ebay also has the california whale tail. it's a shame in the condition it's in but it would also be a shame to have 3' knocked off it.

Is the skin superior to this one on Ebay? And the Frame? I'll have to check into the shipping forum here.
