I was an interior designer for years. Recovered our 2006 Safari cushions with Promessa, an ultra leather product. I found it for $60 a yard and my workroom used 20 yards. I also had the original foam wrapped in dacron batting first. I am extremely pleased with the results. My workroom discounted for me but I would think $600-800 for labor fair. I only have loose cushions so am upholstery person was not necessary.

I am aware of Ultimate Airstream in Oregon. Every thing they do or make is double or triple the price of anywhere else. They are a subsidiary of Airstream Adventures.

We had a front sofa removed when we redesigned our 1975 AS. The cabinet maker gave us the name of a upholsterer and also gave us 2 thin pieces of plywood that matched our new seat pattern. He said the upholster guy will need them.He also told us to measure the height of the back cushions to our desired height. The upholster guy new all the questions to ask. Do you want a bead going around all cushions? Top and bottom? Yes. Do you want 4 inch or 5 inch seat cushions? 5 inch. The backs should be only 4 inches but the stiffness of the bottoms are usually a little stiffer than the backs. don't forget to put the air circles in the back of the seat cushion so it lets the air out when you sit down. Our cushions are 2 four foot bottoms, 1 two foot bottom, 2 four foot backs and 1 two foot back. Made in 3 weeks for $974.00. You need to shop around. I cant get a photo of ours on this quick reply. Ask to see their work.

You might try calling Ian at Ultimate Airstreams (503) 570-9001 or Colonial Airstream (800) 265-9019 to see if they can tell you what the actual Ultraleather product number is.

Being a retired upholsterer..Take your old cushions with the covers on to your local shop. They should be able to use those to patterns.

Try Totofabrics.com for prices in the $17-33 yd range. The color selection is not large but still better than OFS's price tag. If you catch them when they get a new load of material there is usually plenty of yardage. I have acquired bolts upwards of 25 yards. It is all in the timing.

They told me the cushion covers are made by an outside supplier and would take @ 4-5 weeks for delivery and had to be ordered through my dealer. I've held off on the upgrade but today decided to go forward with the new covers. I called my dealer and was absolutely astounded when he quoted me a price of $3,300.00!

I know all things Airstream are really expensive, but I could buy a new Italian leather sofa for that price.

My next option is to consider finding an upholsterer to do the work (I requested patterns for re-upholstering the cushions from Airstream last year. I just looked at the emailed material they sent me and realized that rather than patterns for the cushion covers the patterns they sent are for the foam that goes in the cushions. I sent another request for the cushion cover patterns - we'll see what I get.) The Online Fabric Store has the best prices I've found for purchasing the Ultraleather fabric -

Has anyone gone through an upholsterer to have this done recently and if so how much were the damages?
Yikes! That’s pretty steep for RE-upholstery, they are not building the cushions from scratch. I had my FC cushions re-upholstered this spring in Naples, FL for $1600. Excellent job by a French furniture upholsterer and I’m very pleased. I did not choose leather—that was above my budget, but the tan vinyl leather-look I chose looks and feels remarkably like the high-priced material—and I don’t have to worry about my dog doing damage.

You can buy everything you need directly from the manufacturer who has a direct purchase website online at Villa International.com Airstream also uses another manufacturer but I won't have that name until next weekend. The names on both of my sofas may be the same. I've replaced the arms and seat of my recliner chair and also bought new glider bearings on line at a reasonable cost. Their site breaks down each component of their RV furniture and prices them separately.

Like a Geode--ugly on the outside, beautiful on the inside..or Lipstick on a Pig

Our Phoenix was the lucky recipient of the above mentioned cushions that were st the Salem Rally, then at Ultimate AS. They were not sold through Ultimate Airstream, but direct from the owner. UAS didn't want to be a part of the transaction. We purchased beautiful , practically new cushions and cover + the dinette table for $1500.00. This was a fabulous upgrade. Our unique exterior skin belies the beautiful interior! Thanks Carol and Phillip!

Hate to recommend something that might seem like a circling vulture, but there've been several rollover accidents in the past few weeks. If (as I suspect) those trailers were totaled, you might be able to buy the cushions out of one of them for a bargain. It would require a little legwork. Just a thought.

I took the Ultimate Airstream tour when attending the International Rally last month in Salem. I was impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of the upholstery (many colors and texture choices) and I especially liked the double stitching. I don't find the ultraleather durable enough with my 2 dogs and will consider replacing with a different fabric in the near future.

I was quoted $4500 or $3000 for the cushions only by Jon Edmonds (General Manager). Since they are in your neck of the woods, you may want to check them out. I would have had it done (especially with my 10% coupon) but they were 2 months out on lead time (coupon expires at the end of the year and I won't be back in the northwest by then).

I’m a little late to the party on this thread, but after reading through most of the posts there’s one thing that stands out - Ultraleather. Ultraleather is a brand name, of which has competitors. Yes, it’s nice and supple-but expensive!

I do upholstery for a living. My cost for most lines of Ultraleather is around $50/yd. A quality competitor is Allante by Morbern and costs me around $18/yd. Allante is spec’d for automotive use, which would work well in rv’s, and it looks and feels a lot like leather and offers a good selection of colors.

As someone pointed out, upholstery costs are driven mostly by labor (it takes time and skill to get it right). Next is foam (cushions), then the cover material. Again, as stated by another poster, find a reputable auto uphostery shop and ask to look at “leather-alternatives” type vinyl samples. I’ll bet you can find something that will work for your trailer, that you’ll be happy with, and will bring the price back down to “digestable”. Good luck!

Does anyone have info on just the cushions? We are happy with the covers, but would like more dense cushions on the L-shaped couch in our 28' FC. Had a "professional" recommended by CamperCliniq in Austin, but he was not much help. He wanted new covers if he was going to do the jog. The covers are find; just want denser cushions.

Preventative measures

I know the horse is out of the barn but first thing I did with our 19er was to have the 4 dinette cushions slip covered. Now only did it add some vusyom color but when ready to sell we can remove and have fresh originals. Upholsterers will cost whatever your local going rate is and whether you bring fabric or order theirs. We had zippers put in.

cushions

I had my replacement cushions made by a local guy. He had samples for me to pick from (Naugahyde). We used very firm thick foam. Total complete project $1500, 10 cushions. I wish I had asked to look at some of his finished projects, he was not a perfectionist. You get what you pay for.

I used KTT Enterprises, a local company who makes (and custom cuts) VERY high quality foam. (It's amazing how much heavier the cushions are now from what I took out.) I simply gave them the dimensions of the old cushions. Stuffing the new foam back into the old covers was a workout, but ultimately worked fine.

My L-lounge was around $600 to redo in five-inch thick 36 ILD foam, but I picked up the cushions myself and thus didn't pay shipping.

Note that this is rather firm; my wife puts a topper on it for sleeping, and it's still on the firm side.

Tom
