The cracking is most likely the gel coat surface only. You can learn to sand and reapply gel coat with research on the inter web. Just do not buy into the cup type "expensive" applicator. We redid ours using a HPLV gun from harbor freight with a larger orifice in the gun. Use the cheapest spray gun you can find because the gel coat will set up in the spray gun until you get the "feel" for material and activator mix and the "time" available to spray your piece. I looked for the article that we used as a guide, but it is no longer available. It only took me 7 attempts to get the material to setup correctly and not come off with the sanding after I thought it was dry. When you get it right the surface will be hard and sand able with 600 and 1000 grit paper, then machine compound with a "white" colored rubbing compound. The tan ones will stay in the finish.
It is not that hard once you have a good "feel" for it.
Good luck with what ever direction you choose.
