Kilz original

Any thought's regarding the use of "Kilz Original" on the interior of a 1973 Argosy 24 to eliminate the stains etc.? Good idea, bad idea, terrible idea?

Howdy, I have never tried Kilz but have had much success with Krylon fusion, just did my end caps yesterday and used it in my bathroom fixtures 5 years ago and those fixtures have taken a lot of abuse and are still going strong. If I did this right I think this will link you to my step by step how to thread... http://www.airforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124989

We had a fire in the bathroom of my ambassador, and ended up pulling almost every thing out, and re painting. We used oil based kilz primer, and then bear exterior paint. I think the most important step is prep. Clean clean clean.. The is a post on the fours where they compare all of the paint options. There was a lot of talk about primers and paints made for plastic. Prob a good idea.

It's been over a year and holding up well in the hot Florida summer.

Thank you! So far so good. It's the Allure sticky side planks. Real easy to install, but have a few seems that have gaps. They are hard to notice due to the color, you have to point them out.

Depends upon the surface and the type of stains.

I use Kilz and Bin for lots of remodeling tasks but lately have been using a new water based primer called Stix from Insul-X, for problem surfaces like pvc, vinyl, and plastics.

Ace hardware sells it here by the quart.

The original Kilz is white pigmented shellac, and it works great as a coverup and bonding layer. Shellac will stick to almost anything and almost anything will stick to shellac. Used it on our Minuet about 6 years ago and it is still good. I would recommend just cleaning rather than paint. We had no choice but paint as a previous owner had attacked the interior with a paint brush and vibrant primary colors. I was able to get the paint off but it left a pigmented stain.

If you want a shellac based primer, it is B-I-N by Zinnser. I have found Stix to be better in all cases except one: stopping bleed-thorough of pine knots. Nothing beats shellac for that.
