Question It takes two to tambour...

Hi all, New here - just bought a 1973, 31' Sovereign. Everything is original and we are cleaning her up a bit.

What we've done so far...
1. Removed the green shag carpet and floor tacks. Acacia engineered wood floors to go in...
2. Removed the upholstered bench and two gauchos. We are debating if it is worth reupholstering or taking out the "L" shaped from front area and replacing with a sleep sofa. The ones we are looking at would fit nicely and are fairly light weight (under 130lbs). Wow, removing the fabrics in there has helped with the smell! Thoughts??
3. We've washed everything down in a TSP formula to cut through 40 years of grime and it seems to have done wonders. We are planning to paint the walls a soft off white to freshen the interior.

What we are planning and we are looking for suggestions...
4. The tambour is paper backed and all falling apart. The interior has the fake dark walnut veneer. Do we buy new tambours (Tape-ease suggested walnut veneer tambour) and paint them a lighter color (keeping the plastic-y walnut trim)? Do we buy canvas backing and repair the existing tambours? Do we paint everything to match (the tambours and trim pieces)? What paint or epoxy is used for painting that plastic? Will the paint crack out of the folds on the new tambour? Do we just chuck the tambour idea all together and get a trim carpenter to make flat cabinet doors? Other ideas...?

THANK YOU! Cheers, Britt

My original interior actually looked good in a dumpster.

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

Splitrock - haha! That's why we are trying to do as much as we can for as little as we can... We don't want to go overboard on the remodeling. We plan to use the airstream as a camper on our vacation lot while we are building. After construction we plan to have it has guest accommodation.

If you're going to leave it parked, you don't need the tambours. The tambours are to keep "stuff" from falling out of the lockers while bouncing down the highway.

Britt,

If you're trying to save money repair the tambour using duck cloth (canvas) to replace the backing and glue. That's what I used to repair the tambour in our '71 Safari. It works well and is fairly cheap and keeps the original look.

Our '75 Sovereign sounds a lot like yours except our shag carpet was pink. I am leaving the two tambour storage units in the kitchen, all of the rest will be replaced with cabinet doors.

We are also debating what to do with the old gaucho. It is going to cost a lot for foam to replace the old stuff.

Here's some pics.

Tambour... I know some folks have removed the tambour in the upper cabinets/storage bins entirely and replaced them with sliding (left-to-right) plexi. Try using the search function to find those threads??? Here's a pic of one that I saved but don't recall which member.

Good luck - post pictures!!!!

Britt,
we redid the tambour with new tambour that we purchased through ODM. On the L-shape, over 19 years we have attempted to make it work as we have twin mid section beds. From Sleeper sofa's, to a built bed and even the old L-shape. We ended up placing a U-shape ultra leather dinette with removable table. We also had a ottoman made to fill the space as it can be sued as a full to almost double bed.
You can see the concept hopefully better than the pics. We bought the U-shape from Bradd and Hall on clearance and got a great deal. They built the table and ottoman to fit and as you can see, it look not bad.

Good luck, take your time and do it right. ha-ha

Happy Airstreaming.
