I was pretty mad at the PO at first, but thought back to the 9 hour buying and inspection process and although he believed he under priced this "gem" and believed it was in amazing shape, he let me inspect it all I wanted and pulled it out for me to crawl under. So this was my fault for being too green.

I could see there were a couple goofy things about it that I was going to fix/ take out like this:

And these puppies:

But my main draw to it was that the interior was pretty much unmolested and original. I thought a good scrubbing and a new shower pan would get me by for the next few years... NOPE.

Oh well. I'm lucky I found this stuff instead of breathing in mouse pooh and black mold for the foreseeable future. And this way I'll basically have a brand new airstream without dropping $50k. No tools will be thrown. Like anything old, it is gonna be a can of worms. I've made peace with that fact.

Yep, "those puppies" are one of the only things to survive on my '64 Bambi II. I'll be glad to have them if I get a flat!

Really!? Those came with the trailer? I thought they were some concoction from the PO. Like something to prevent his other concoction from getting ripped off.

Don't they get snagged on things? When I finally take this on the trails to get to some of my favorite desert camp spots there can be some decent sized rocks. And I already saw sparks flying from those 'Sleighs' attached to the bumper guarding the black tubes (make shift gray water tank). And that was just from driving on the highway.

You can probably shorten them a bit if you're going off roading. My sister was traveling behind me & saw mine sparking too. I might have them cut down a bit, but if they save my rear end in the event of a flat, a few sparks are no biggie!

Got all the trim off, way harder than I thought. There were many rusted screws replacing rivets and the rivet remover tool couldn't get them off.

I recommend a dremel with a little metal cutting disk.

To my understanding the front and back c channels will stay on the shell and the channels along the side will stay on the frame.

Next I'm going to just try dremeling off the rusted bent bolts holding the shell to the frame, and then figure out what other rivets will need to come out.

My banana wraps seem to be very tricky to remove, so I'm going to hold off doing that long as possible.

Oh and definitely use a stool or rolling office chair to save your knees and back when removing the perimeter rivets!

If you lost your propane key like I did, and you are steady with a drill, you can get these guys from the back side.

I tried replacing the shower pan. Please help.

So these rusted elevator bolts are no joke. The dremel is by far nicer to work with than my 4in wheel angle grinder other than the wheels breaking off fairly quick. So no more messing around...

I tried replacing the shower pan. Please help.

Between a chisel, a dremel some elbow grease, I got all the bolts and screws out. I believe I will be able to lift the shell off the frame.

Next step according to the internet is to build a wood frame in this thing to keep the shape. I agree with that because I can see this thing getting pretty skewed.

If it doesn't lift right off, then I'm going to have to take the wraps all the way off and take a look inside. The way everything is sandwiched makes that a step I want to avoid at all costs.

Make sure that you check the ribs on mine there were bolt downs L brackets with a screw in the rib and a bolt in the bottom! A couple of hidden rivets by the door as for the floor channel all of mine stayed on the floor you will have pop rivets that attach the belly pan in the front to the channel with that channel detached from the shell it (the shell) becomes flimsy and hence the bracing! So to save some frustration take a thin putty knife and go around the shell from the inside and push the putty knife between the shell and the channel this will also help you make sure that you got all of the hold downs!
Cliff

Yes I said that! Or did I?

Thanks Cliff,
I did not see the L brackets so they must have done away with those by 1972. I'm pretty sure the front door is hiding some tricky secret rivets but'll see what happens when I lift it. I tried your putty knife trick and so far I couldn't make it all the way around, I think there is some paint or something holding it down. Hopefully it breaks loose when I lift it.

So last night I started building the wood frame and tested out lifting the shell off the frame... Looks like I only missed 1 bolt! Took care of that and it lifted right up.

Now I'm just gonna beef the frame up some more before lifting it all the way up and putting it on blocks.

I definitely recommend doing a test lift like I did while the framing isn't too much in the way to take care of hidden rivets and bolts. And be careful when you lower it, I pinched this thing by the bottom of the front door. Thankfully is will be hidden.

Also be careful by the water heater cut out, I almost made a nice crease there because there was no "C" channel under it to hold it apart.

Here is the start of my frame:

At this point I could easily convince someone to not try replacing their shower pan!
