How tall is an Airstream

What would be the approximate heigth of a mid seventies model Airstream from the ground at the bottom of the tires to the top of the AC cover (low Profile). Thanks I am working on a extension to my garage.

You might squeak it in under a 9'-0 door, but I would go with a 10'-0 door.

I think with an average-height AC unit it's about 9'6" on new axles, I'd probably go for an 11 or 12' tall door just for good measure. The '70s specs quote 8'10" but I think that's the trailer roof height and you have to add height for the AC unit.

Depends on the A/C unit and any "stacks" that may be on top of your particular Airstream. A vintage trailer will sit higher with new axles too. I'd hate to have it built to "just fit" then get a new A/C or axle(s) and then not fit. I'd go with 10' minimum.

Besides, if you are going to the effort to modify your garage - it'd be best to leave you options open for future trailers or the next owner's "toys".

Our 66 Safari with new axle is 9'even, that is to the top of the fantastic fan (highest point of trailer)-- AC is a cabin mount...not roof. Our garage extension is 9'6" .. brought up from a 7' opening... Man was that an exercise in sweat!!

My 1975 with the current semi-worn out axles is about 9'-2" I won't go under anything under 10' with it. My wife's aunt and uncle have a later unit with good axles and it will just clear a 10' opening with maybe 4" to spare.

If you are talking about getting into and out of your garage, you have some good ideas now.

But if you want to do work on the trailer's roof while it's in the garage, that a whole other ball game.

What I am having built is an extension to the front of my existing garage which will connect to the side of my house along the drive way. The sides will be open and it will be a carport as such. I had hoped to be able to have the opening tall enough to at least back the Airstream under it on those occasions when I had the trailer home from storage. But I am not going to be able to have the opening that tall. It would throw off the roof line and not connect to the roof of the current garage. All of this has to be approved by my HOA and the City code. Oh well it was a thought.

Do you know how tall your ambassador is? I am buying a steel garage to house mine and want to get the door height right. I’m “hoping” it fits under a 10’ door.

Hey Don, what was the final decision on the height of your trailer? I’m in the same boat, and buying a steel garage to fit my ambassador, I’m hoping it will fit under a 10’ roll up door.
