Fiberglass end cap repair

I want to paint the fiberglass end cap in my 65 Safari. There are multiple holes from snaps, rivets, etc. I want to patch and smooth the holes and then paint with a Krylon spray paint. Is there such a thing as spackle for fiberglass? Or, can I use fiberglass resin and hardener to fill the holes, sand it down after it hardens and paint it? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Use thickened resin

Is there a marine store nearby?

I would mix the resin and paint the edges of the hole then add filler or wait till the resin started to harden and fill the hole with the thickening resin.

May be easier to just use Bondo.

Dave, If you try to just fiil holes they will crack and show or fall out. I suggest you use an orbital sander to hollow out a circle around the hole, lay in some fiberglass screen with some epoxy and then fair out with fiberglass bondo. All can be found at home depot. Itried to attach sketch but dont see it.

I didn't want a big can of epoxy so I used gorilla glue epoxy. Comes in a 2 part syringe. Mixed some in tin foil cupcake cups and put it into the hole with Popsicle stick. Tape around the holes for runs. Then sanded down after letting cure overnight. Painted with krylon, only way you notice them is the epoxy was a little smoother than the surrounding endcap. If you force some epoxy into the hole then put a piece of tape over it the epoxy settles to the tape getting really close to a smooth surface.

The PO of our '65 caravel cut the rear bathroom in half. We fixed that and the endcaps with West Systems Epoxy. I've also used it for quite a few boat repairs -- it's the standard in the Marine Industry.

Here's one source. I'd use:
105 Resin
206 Hardener (205 in cold weather)
Pump dispensers to get mix correct
410 microlite filler for non-structural areas
Fiberglass, if necessary for larger repairs. Use on back of endcap if possible.

Lots of good advice at the West Systems site
