Oooh, I see a fridge in your shopping list...Does the trailer currently have a fridge and stove? I ask because if you have original appliances that you are thinking of writing off I am looking for an original fridge for my '63 Tradewind, dead or alive is fine, if the exterior is in good shape...

Congrats on the delivery. I see tanks and electrical, which means a real gut job. I am guessing you will pull the shell? If you are going that deep into it may as well so you can make sure the frame is sound. I suggest you haunt eBay. I have gotten many great deals there (fridge, water heater, heat pump, etc.). You have an AC unit listed - go for the heat pump. Unless you are camping in weather below freezing, heat pump works great. Post more pics when you get a chance!

She Arrived

She arrived from AK looking like she had a long 10 hour trip. Her insides are scattered about and most of the systems have been removed. We still plan to take her down to skin and renew her (not a shell off) but it's turning out to be way more expensive than we imagined (How much can you spend on a renewal and not lose your shirt?). We aren't even sure she's a Tradewind. Would she be marked? And what about the interior skin? My husband, a general contractor, plans to sub the plumbing and electrical work. What are your thoughts on closed cell spay insulation for wall and under carriage?

Thanks so much for sharing all of your experience and wisdom. This site has been so valuable!

It looks like a Trade Wind. I think your serial number would define the model.
You must be happy it's in your driveway now. Or maybe not!

You can look in the classified section of these forums and gain examples of asking prices of similar trailers in similar conditions. The early sixties are good, the size of your trailer is good, it has a good shell, frame, axles, etc. The restored ones that look as they came from the factory are worth more. Renovated ones that are travel ready done by enthusiasts are worth less. But I should think your trailer nicely done would be worth high teens anyway.

Spray in foam insulation is not recommended by folks on these forums. The thinking is it tends to crumble with the vibration and jarring during towing. Many folks use foam board insulation under the subfloor, and various schemes between the walls. Airstream just puts in batting insulation. Mice love it, and it holds moisture real well.

Here is a picture of some 50 year old insulation out of my Trade Wind. Heck, you can even see some foam board insulation I put under the subfloor.

Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse... but you take a boat in the air that you don't love... she'll shake you off just as sure as the turn of the worlds.

HELPPPPP. What have we done? This is a big job.

We found a local RV service shop that would be happy to help us with our restoration project but I need some more guidance. We plan to keep the exterior original but gut and modernize the interior (she needs all new-wiring, plumbing, insulation, flooring patched, systems, appliances, and cabinets). We also have some exterior areas (wheel well damage and a patch) that need to be addressed (also not sure about the recommended exterior repair suggested by the RV shop- don't fix the aluminum but use a black wheel curb or something like that ). My husband plans to remove the interior and then we would hand it off to the RV shop where it would be renewed. The RV shop charges around $95. hour and the owner (very experienced RV guy) will tell me where I can find the best prices on parts. We live in North Carolina.
What are your thoughts? PLEASE HELP. THANKS!!!

ALSO...Is she a Tradewind? She only has a Land Yacht Plaque.

Guessing this is for your water heater? RV parks do not normally supply 240 volts:

Siemens Q260 60-Amp 2 Pole 240-Volt Circuit Breaker

VIN is confusing. Looks like 24D-0200.
There is a 1959 Tradewind listed on Vintage Airstream Model Year Reference chart with a VIN of 24D-0273, which seems to indicate yours is older than 1959 but I think that was the year the TW debuted and there is no other 24 footer in that time period??

1960 tw

My references (Airstream Serial Numbers by year from Airstream.com) show that the 0 before the 200 is the year therefor she is a pretty 60. The D was the Jackson Centre code, it looks like the twins were made in California and the doubles in Ohio in 1960. Tradewinds were 24', and she is not an International because there is no I at the beginning of the serial#.
So, 24D-0200 is right on. Width 96". Dry weight listed at 3200-3450 and tongue weight 340.

BUT the nameplates clearly indicate it was built in CA...

It's a puzzle because VIN's weren't standardized until the mid-60's. Coupled with that is the fact that California-made coaches had to conform with the Department of Housing regs beginning in 1958 so you have that extra badge on there with numbers that don't necessarily correlate to the coach manufacture.

But, it looks like yours is a California-made 24D - 24-foot Double, and that length makes it a Tradewind. As with cars, model years started manufacture the previous year, so a trailer badged as a 60 was made in 59 and sometimes the manufacture date confuses the model year date. So yours could have been manufactured 3/59. The 0200 could be 1960 and #200 in production sequence.

Check with vintageairstream.com - tons of good info on that site

Oh boy, I just found this thread. You definately have a TradeWind based in the serial number. 24 = TradeWind / 24 foot in length - bumper to ball, D = double bed, 0200 is the production number off the assembly line for this model from the CA plant and 359 was the model year = March of 1959. Yours is a CA built unit because of the streetside toilet and curbside tub/shower. I have been keeping an Early TradeWind Registry based on serial numbers and have 166 TradeWinds listed with the inclusion of yours.

CA and OH built TradeWinds, as well as other models, used a different coding style as you can see from the link below from RJ Dial's Archives. I have serial number 24T-0114 - 858 from the CA factory when it was located on Firestone Blvd in Norwalk.

1959 Trade Wind 24' - Vintage Airstream

You'll find RJ's archive site to be invaluable for reference and ideas. If you have refurbishment questions, just ask away. Congrats on your new-to-you early TradeWind. They're the perfect size and era of trailers IMHO.

Water fill?

I also have a 1960 tradewind in the process of bringing it back to life. I have a question about hooking up to city/campground water. If your looking at the back of the trailer there is a water valve behind the bumper on the left side (facing the back) is that the fill or the drain for the water lines/water heater?

Hi, We have a much smaller trailer, a 1963 Bambi. Hubby restored it about 10 years ago... at the time of the restoration he had a lengthy thread with lots of how-to's and photos... when you have some time you might want to scroll through to see what problems he came up against and his solutions. I can tell you we refurbished everything we could and didn't purchase new unless necessary... All our original appliances were brought back to life... so that saved us bundles! Hubby did all the work including completely rewiring, plumbing, etc. You definitely want new wiring and plumbing. You might also think about upgrading lighting to led, etc. to save battery power, especially if you camp without hookups. Have fun and enjoy the ride... take thousands of photos, especially when dismantling... you will want to refer to them! Here is his thread: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f36/...mbi-17925.html

Hi Jake ~ welcome to the group. Its hard to tell what that connection is without actually seeing a picture of it. Could you post one or two? In fact, I'd like to see pictures of your whole trailer, inside and out.

If I haven't already, I'd also like to add your TW to the registry.

Thanks,
Brad
