Man, I learn something from you every single time you post. Thank you Fred

Seems like most of these trailers I've seen that have frames replaced keep the pipe in the center for the "look" - but replace with a ladder frame along to the back........

love to see these old trailers. We have redone the frame under the floor but left the pipeframe just reinforced and added too and replaced the floor. Since it was in pretty usable condition we are resurfacing the stove and fridge and putting it back together and up for sale. 1950 Globetrotter with back crossbed and front dinette/bed. It has been upgraded with a 30 gal. fresh water tank and pump and 12v lights. It has also been polished and will be ready to entrust to another fan come early Spring.

I know this is an older thread but I wanted to post this info. I found the mounts for the wheel well covers interesting. They match the brackets that are on my 1950 liner perfectly. Only 2 of the 6 brackets are still attached and they aren't 1/4 turn brackets originally. Looking at the 2 left on mine (so rusty and worn, they are more than likely original) they have 2 screws to hold the bracket to the shell. The center screw on each bracket held the cover on. Where the bracket is missing, the center hole looks to be about a 1/2" hole drilled deep to give the mounting screw clearance so that screw went through the cover and into the bracket only. Link to photos in the thread I posted asking what they were below:

1948 Globe Trotter (just purchased)

My wife and I just purchased a 1948 22' Globe Trotter (Liner?). It has spent it's life in the southwest in an arid climate, but of course has some issues that we'll have to investigate, but first, we have to get it home to Pennsylvania. I have three options: 1st, tow it home, this may be problematic just from the standpoint of it's age although I am told by the current owner that it is road-worthy, he has re-packed the bearings and he has put new tires on it. But, after reading up on the history of these, those earlier year models had a tubular frame and a tubular axle(?) and cannot be towed at speeds greater than 45-50 mph. My second option is to haul it home myself, I have years of experience hauling and have no hesitation in driving a trailer that far (1800 miles), my concern is whether an 18' long bed (on my flat bed) will properly (safely) haul a 22' long Airstream on it. It can overhang on both ends of my flat-bed (the overall length of my flat-bed is 23'), so it'd have about 2' hanging off the rear of the flat-bed. My concern is not only the length, but the height (about 9') which when added to the trailer height = about 12'. So, if anyone out there has ever hauled an Airstream on a flat-bed, please enlighten me on the issues. My third option is having it professionally hauled. The only concern here is finding a reputable company to haul it at a reasonable price. I've been quoted from $2000.00 to $4000.00. If anyone out there knows of a good trucking company, please forward me their contact information. I've always wanted one of these and the earlier model years just seem to have that post-war airplane-without-wings construction that we appreciate. If anyone out there has any experience with this model, I'd like to talk to you.

1948 Globe Trotter (just purchased)

I am not only totally new to Airstream(ing), but forums like this as well. I earlier posted a reply to a post from 2011, so I don't know whether or not it will get much of a response, it was lengthy so rather than rewrite it, please take a look, my "name" is 48isgreat. It has questions regarding how to get a 1948 Airstream from one end of the country to the other (without going crazy and/or broke). But, I also wanted to know if anyone has any idea how many 1948 models (22' Globe Trotter/Liner) are out there. I think there were originally about 400?? made.

Help identifying!

Any help identifying this beauty would be great! It measures 18 without the hitch and 21-22 with. The only numbers on it are on a square silver plate by the door that says 3016 and 1755 N. Main, Los Angeles. Windows open, has a bathroom in back with a dinette in the front. Kitchen counter/sink across from the entry door without a stove.
Thanks in advance!

Sarah ~ It's a 1953 Flying Cloud - check this out: 1953 Flying Cloud

Your 3016 VIN# falls right in line with the 3001-3154 numbers listed...

The VIN plate may not be OEM to this AS. See recent posts in SarahB's main thread, as linked recently.

Jay,
As another Liner owner, don't know which model mine is due to all the variance, you can trailer the 22 foot liners on a flat bed. I picked up mine from my parents a couple years back and put it on my wife's family's 20' flat bed hauler. I towed it very close to 700 miles to get it to my home, and the only problem I had was all the looky loos on the road. I took as many pics as I could, even if my wife decided to take long distance shots so there is not as much detail in some of them. There are a couple of "DO NOT DO" things that others have mentioned throughout the years that may help. Let me know for you want a longer version and I can type it up here.

Matt
