We have finally completed cutting the subfloor pieces this weekend and have begun to drill all of the panels for the elevator bolt and screws. We are going to do a temporary install of the subfloor and then remove it from the frame to be throughly coated with penetrating epoxy to help prevent future damage from any leaks that we may experience in the future. This will allow us to epoxy the bolt and screw holes as an added precaution.

Safe Travels !!

I bet you hate covering up the wonderful looking frame. It is much better than the Airstream "pipe" frame the trailer was built with. The subfloor is an integral member of the overall strength of the trailer, and yours will be top notch. It won't be long before you can set the body back on the subfloor and frame assembly and move forward from there.

MrRivet let me walk on the decking today (barefoot of course)!

It is SOLID!

So exciting to see the decking in place and it helps with visuals of how the new flooring may look. Yes ... I’ve already ordered it. And I’ve possibly ordered material for window treatments.

We will be more at rest once the shell transfer happens. BUT so much more work just to get to that point. Rotisserie ahead!

Having just been though this process, I can share your excitement. It is great walking on the floor knowing, I repeat knowing, everything below you is in great shape with no hidden soft spots or rust.

In my opinion, a rotisserie is a must have. Much easier working on the insulation and belly pan looking down, than looking up. Are you building or buying one? I built mine out of wood, but if I were to do it again, I think I would use steel. It's a little scary flipping it over that last time with everything done and questioning the strength of the unit.

Great work!

Thanks for the positive supporting comments everyone. It’s always a great motivator to receive these reply’s from fellow Airstreamers that have been through the stages that we are currently working through.
SteinVT I just read through your restoration blog and that is truely “Great Work”! I am on the subscription list for your blog now so I will be keeping up with your progress. As far as flipping the frame, we are going to use the lifting gantries to lift and flip the frame and then set the frame back down on the supports that we are using to level the frame during the subfloor installation. Since we built the frame and assembling everything new prior to moving the shell this leaves the gantries free for this duty. Once completed we will move the new frame and pull the trailer into the spot under the gantries and remove the shell from the old frame assembly then replace it with the new.

Safe Travels!!

Over the last couple of weeks we have finished the subfloor epoxy coating and installation. The DIY sheet metal brake that I had constructed several months ago was finally pressed into service with all of the required C-channel being bent. This weekend I was able to install the final sections of C-channel onto the subfloor. This upcoming week we hope to drop the axle and flip the frame to begin installation of the holding tanks, insulation and belly pans. Of course this will depend on Tropical Storm/Hurricane Michaels track.

Safe Travels!!

We were very happy to have found you two years ago! Can't wait to be able to install yours along with the original on the Liner. We have referred several people your way. Thanks again for all your hard work and amazing craftsmanship.

CHEERS!!!

Belly up!!!

Today was kind of exciting! In preparation for an easier install of the holding tanks, plumbing, insulation and a new belly pan MrRivet and I flipped the frame today. The process was easier than I anticipated and no one got hurt.

Nice work. You'll love working on it upside down.

From the pictures it appears you controlled the rotation with a come along attached to an arm bolted to the rotating pivot. Very clever. I was always very nervous doing a rotation after added anything off axis, like the axle. Surprisingly it never was too much off a problem. I used a 4' bar to turn it.

Wish I had your weather, looks gorgeous. Where I am it's 38 degrees outside with a high of 53 today. I'm about shut down for the winter.

steinVT says you'll love working on your trailer upside down. I've tried it hanging from my feet, but I found it rather uncomfortable.

Just returning from my summer break...now I get to work on the airstream for the next 10 months of good weather...

That is first class design and fabrication work on the frame and installation of the tanks! Too bad it will all be covered up.

Look what followed me home last night! I have my hands full with this 1948 project but I couldn’t pass it up. There is a 1963 Safari hiding under that patina. MsRivet calls it a “Hot Mess!”

Safe Travels!!

You have a pretty severe case. No known cure.
The shell looks pretty nice except for a little dirt.
