VINTAGE 1948 AIRSTREAM LINER Travel Trailer 22 ft.
Hey all, I found an old Liner being used as a shed. The door is off but there and there are a couple of good size dents, one front and one rear but neither go all the way through to the inside. It looks like most of the interior is there but in rough shape. Any suggestions on what to offer the guy. So far he's not interested in selling his shed.

What a shame. Is there a frame and axle under that? I would trade him for a new shed. That trailer will take a full rebuild and a new frame, many $$$$$.
But, there are very few of that age around.

I'd offer to build him a bigger shed to replace it. Cost approximately $1500?

Bill, Actually there is a frame and even though it doesn't look like it, the frame is actually a few inches above ground. The frame and axle will need to be replaced and the extent of restoration doesn't scare me off. I have another Holiday to restore and will have a new frame and axle built for it. I've been looking for something a little bigger than the Holidays. I also found a 49, 19' Vagabond as well sitting under a shed. It's being used as a hunt camp, has all the original interior. So I'm torn. The Vagabond is in better shape but it's not an Airstream. If I had someplace to put them, I go after both!

I vote the Liner, they look sooo good when all fixed up. And since your "PO in waiting" doesn't seem to have an emotional attachment to it, I'd also offer a replacement shed of similar size. Heck, he'd come out ahead as it would at least have a door...
Keep us posted, this would be one helluva restoration to follow!

Decisions... decisions
That sounds like a tough decision! I like Airstreams, but I also have a great fondness for the "vintage kin". Not sure why, it may be that it's just something a little more unique. Personally, if you've got the option and the Vegabond has the better interior, I would be tempted to pick it, but it is your project. Have fun with whatever you choose - and as for price on the '48, I'd try and barter it for a replacement shed :-), perhaps a shed from 1948.

perhaps you could sit down and explain that his shed is the kind of thing that should be in a museum, not rotting away... and if you don't go after the vagabond, i'd love the details. i've been looking for one myself.
if the option of replacing the shed doesn't work, maybe you were meant to have the vagabond. but the liner still should not be sitting there rotting, and maybe someone else with more $$ should have a go..

Hey Birdie Momma, Both trailers are in a national forest. Both are weekend or hunting season places and after six years of leaving notes twice a year on the Liner and talking to folks I caught there in other trailers, I haven't gotten the guy to call me back. I've basically said I'm an old trailer nut and in love with his old trailer and want to restore it. I've told him to name his price. That's scary but at least I'll know. I also left my info with the folks I talked to. On the next trip they said they gave it to the owner but he just crumpled it up and trashed it?
I'm headed down again in a couple weeks. Maybe I'll catch him this time. I've tried to find tax records etc but it doesn't have an address just out in the woods.
