I don't think they started stamping the VIN on the frames until 1979-1980

You keep looking on the frame....I tell ya....The Serial number was on a brass plate located to the left of the door, just below the window corner. If its not there...you don't have it. Very similar to a pilot you has an engine failure,,,,he can't wish it back into the air. You can't wish a serial number onto the frame.

It looks like you may need to try and get a new VIN tag issued by your state. In some states if you can prove ownership but have no title or tags they will issue a new vin and tags that your affix to the frame. Check with your DMV about the process it might be the way to go but I am sure its a pain.

If I were you, and had a serial number on the title (I would not go to much further without any paperwork) I would order one of the replica plates from VTS, stamp my number on it and press on with my work.

Looks like once I get the trailer into towing shape, I need to take it to the state patrol and have it inspected. I don't have a vin plate by the door and I don't have a title. I have a bill of sale, and even with the vin number, no title = inspection.

There is no number on the axle either? The liner I just found has no tag or title. How the heck do you register it then?

That can be real issue depending on what state you live in. Contact your state DMV and find out the rules for registering a trailer and go from there. Some states will issue you a new vin and title with a bond attached . Some States don't require a title.
