We also started insulating the interior walls.
I have to get all inside insulation in and the wiring complete, before installation of the end caps and the lower wall sections from and back. once this is done, we can install front and rear window.
As for the insulation we used 3/4” Styrofoam with the aluminum tape on one side. This was installed with the aluminum foil against the interior skin. On top we are installed another layer of 1/4” reflectix Foil, which is almost like double wrap and Aluminum Foil on both sides.
Im sure this will give us some great insulation value. The Wiring will go either directly on top, or i cut small channels in the foil and tape the wiring within.. any thoughts on that ?

I'm not an electrician, so take this for what it is worth. (Almost nothing!) I would think you want your wires protected from rubbing on anything. Airstream used rubber grommets at the ribs to protect the wiring. Snuggle your wiring inside the insulation so it isn't rubbing on anything metal or sharp.

Your Liner looks like a well insulated trailer.

I already have a bag of grommets, which will be utilized for the wiring . I do agree with protecting the wiring from chaving though . I should get my wiring this week and I see how it works . Thanks

Hi Stefan,
What do you think of 16inch tires? I am going to be on some rough dirt roads and wondered if the little extra height and width were worth it.

I was also wondering about the Dexter Airflex axle. This potentially has two problems. One is the width of the system and the other is that it could be totally overkill. I was only considering it because we like being off the grid and that usually means some dirt roads.

I appreciate your experience and advice.

I have been delayed in my restoration. I wanted someone to help me with the metal work as I have never done that before and unfortunately they can't help me until June. Oh well, just gives me more time to draw layouts.

Have a great day.

Dave, where are you located at ? If not too far come on by and I can show you some of the metal work.
As for axle and tire combo, I would think a regular torsion axle should be fine. I have straight axle as it was original design and if I'm not mistaken , my tires are 16". I do know that the old tires were tall , but they also had clearance issue on the frame . I'm happy with the setup I have right now, as it actually gives me plenty of clearance , yet the original look .

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for your generous offer but I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan. While the delay is disappointing, it has allowed me to get everything else lined up and ready to go.

Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated. My trailer currently has 15" wheels and a non torsion straight axle. I will definitely go with a torsion axle. I wanted to keep the original appearance on the outside. The inside is a different story. I have a 9 and 7 year old to consider, and I want as little current draw as possible.

Have a great day and thank you again.

Looks GREAT! What did you use to adhere the foam to the shell and the reflective insulation to the foam?

The foam is cut to be tight within the frames and does not move. Did not needed any glue. The seams on the end cap of the foam are taped . Each layer of reflectix on the end cap is taped to the foam at the seams . The rest is only taped at the frames .

Today we made some more progress, insulated most of the Liner with the 3/4” foam and then started the wiring. We are using marine grade commercial wiring, which is of higher quality, than your standard household cable. Plus it is multi stranded and flexible.
the wiring is indebted between the two layers of insulation.
Enjoy the photos

Update:

All pre-wiring is done. insulation is 90% complete and front and rear endcap are in place.
Next step is to finish out side wall front and back, so i can finally install those windows.. thats gonna be a challenge by itself, as i have no idea as of yet, what to use to set the windows. the original one had the window set with silicone and a small round aluminum trim.. i might either just buy a gasket, or set them the same way again. not sure yet..

Just to let you guys know, we are still working on the liner. Progress is slow. After all wiring was finally installed , we decided to start polishing the interior walls before we install them. We should be able to get the first walls installed within a week or two. We update at that time with some pictures :-)

I live in the Central Florida Panhandle and was rebuilding a pontoon boat from the pontoons up and had a company from Pensacola bring samples of their panels like these.
The Gill Corporation
Really strong load testing and comes with various attachment and trim brackets.

we finally got most of the windows in , but still missing one. the front and rear window are still out, until we are done polishing and have the front and rear endocarp secured.
thanks to my wife, all interior panels were cleaned of their old paint and we started polishing the interior walls. I estimate 3 more weekends and we are finally starting to lay out the interior :-)

y’all enjoy the pictures.. it sure has been a long journey :-)

You're on a long journey not many of us take. Building a new 1948 Liner ain't easy. You'll have to take it to Jackson Center "open house" the first weekend in June sometime and show it off. And take it to other Airstream rallies too.

Canopener in January? You can't go camping in January. It could be 10 below and a foot of snow everywhere.

Funny how us folks that live in the great frozen north don't even think about trailering in the winter, unless we are "snow birds" who look for a break in the snow and ice and escape to the south.

There are weather advantages to living in the south, especially during the winter months.

Keep us posted on the Liner progress.

David,

the cold in january don’t bother me. What worries me is trying to get this Liner and my 34 limited ready in time for the can opener.. lots of work still ahead :-)
