As mentioned in a prior post, when drilling all the panels, i actually lay the old panels on top of the new Aluminum and secure those with glecos on the corners. That way everything will be drilled exactly like the original panels. Sometimes i am still a little off during assembly, but running the drill through right before riveting will help.
I managed it to get 4 end cap panels cut already and the roof panels cut and drilled as well as the small pieces between the windows.
The aluminum still has the protective film on, so i don’t scratch it up..
I have some more panels to cut and drill tomorrow , as well as need to roll the bead in the corner panels.
I hope i will get at least the rear end cap completely sealed and riveted.

the neighbors gonna love me tomorrow though...

Rob,
If you do not consider the Labor, the material part is really not that bad. And replacing all panels will definitely eliminate old leaks, plus it makes the polishing so much faster.

well, i am done for now.Time for some back pain reliever and a beer . here are the pictures for this evening:

Some say enough beer is a pain reliever, at least until morning. You hung a lot of aluminum today.

today was a slow day. i worked on the end cap panels to get the bead rolled in and all holes drilled.
I did end up and have 5 panels done.
I think it turned out pretty good, even though i have a couple spots, where the aluminum did not wanted to for right, but when compared to the original it actually has less waves in it..

done for today.. this coming week will be slow again, until the weekend..

its sunday evening and its time for an update

i have been working almost every evening this week for a couple of hours on the Liner as well as worked half friday, half saturday and most day today.
Thanks to my wife being inside with the bucking bar, we managed to finish the rear end cap, the side panels and the entire roof. it all came together pretty good i believe :-)
the center roof panel alone took the longest due to the long seams. Overall i believe it turned out ok.

the next big project is to replace the fwd end cap.
i believe this will be another 4 days at 10 hrs each until it is done.
one of the other projects we are working on is the polishing of the original window frames.
i am trying to get those done as soon as i can, so i can finally start sealing up the camper.
after the windows will be the task of making the door fit correctly. i have the feeling, that this will be pretty aggravating though.. but we shall see..

btw, anybody got a good set of door hinges ?

Hey, Kzoo just acquired an old Liner. The photo makes it look in quite good shape. I referred him to your thread so he can see how they were built.

thank you guys for the compliments.
The work lately has been going slow. a lot of small stuff to do, that don’t really show a lot of progress. The old window frames are a real pain to clean, but i do not want to rebuild them as well.. i guess leaving some original pieces, gives the trailer some character.
I did manage it to hang the main entry door and the door within the door. still need to make a new rain gutter on the main door.
I also have two window frames installed. the glass is just set in place to keep the weather out.
As for the skin replacement, i started yesterday with the fwd end cap. i estimate 2 more nice weather weekends and the end cap is done..

btw, i am looking for some pictures of the original entry step to get some ideas on how it is build. I did not have a step on mine.. just rotted frame

as usual, here some pictures:

The rise of the Phoenix! From a pail of rust comes a new trailer. Thanks for your good photos of all you are doing. Hanging that door in a door must have been a real challenge.

The door was pretty hard to get aligned , since I had to completely build it and the original frames were bend as well as patched prior . The final allignement will be done once the interior walls are in . The interior walls provide additional stiffness for the shell .

Hi Submariner,
I bought a '50 liner that needs a total overhaul. I don't know what I am doing, but that is half the fun. Thank you for your inspiration. With any luck I am hoping to finish it in two years.

Submariner, meet Kzoo. There is also another new Liner owner, user paul0265 or something like that. It's amazing these 65 year old Airstreams are still showing up. The moisture and mice can't wreck the shell! They deserve restoration and showing.

Submariner,
What are your thoughts on a toilet. I was thinking about a composting toilet like Nature's Head. It will take up more floor space but I don't need a black tank. We camp at places that at most have electricity. A fresh water tank is a necessity so I want to maximize it.

I love how you updated the center pole frame. I will do the same.

Have you thought about a layout? I would love to know what you are planning.
