The silver looking stringers are they made out of aluminum or galv steel?

Great looking frame,

If you use POR15 you have to use their metal prep cleaner first.

Have you considered having the frame powder coated?

the springs are new, so is the hardware, u-bolts and so on. I was planing on using the existing axle, but replace the entire backing plates with new ones. old drums are good. Any objections on this ?

I do plan on getting the welding on all pieces done today, so i can disassemble it and paint the steel.

I will post some more later.

I was reading somewhere , you can use the Chassis coat directly on Steel without primer.. thats while i only bought the chassis coat and not the rust coat. Any advice?
And if primer is needed, can i just get some self etching primer from the auto parts place or do i need to use the por 15 product ?

I do not plan on powder coating, as i can not get the outrigger off the center pipe after welding.. plus its overkill i believe.

I would get a complete new axle. You wouldn't want to do all this work and then break a spindle off of an old axle. Broken spindles are not uncommon.

Do what Lance said. The old spindles are a real problem to find appropriate bearings for....impossible if your on the road. Original had a 4 inch drop...I suggest a new straight axel ASSEMBLY...mounted below the springs. You will get all the new brakes, hub and hardware and extra ground clearance (which you will appreciate.) It will be cheaper too.

Mhh, new Axle? well i did not plan on getting a new axle, and i do not want to increase the ground clearance much as i want to keep the original appearance as much as possible. New Axle would also mean new rims and different tire size.. I have to check on that one..

got to see, if i maybe get a dropped spindle axle.. it would definitely be installed on top of the leaves.

The first gas station you pull out of. typical gas station with a n elevated drive, your pipe will be trashed and you will always wonder where the force has taken effect. A new axel has no effect on wheels and tire size...you pick what you want when you order it.

I was under the impression, that i will not be able to purchase new axles with the correct bolt pattern for my rims?

i have been working some more the last couple weeks.
The frame is entirely welded out and then painted 2 coats of por15 rust protection and 1 coat of semi gloss chassis paint... someone surely could have told me, not to get that paint on your skin... what a mess..

After pre assembling everything with bolts, i started to rivet all cross members with 1/4” rivets.. that took a while as well, as there are 300 rivets in this frame..

here some of the pictures i took during my progress :

Next project i did last week was the floor.
I used 5/8 plywood and cut it to size, first per template i made and then verified both end pieces under the shell, to make sure, my curves are correct.
After everything was verified, i epoxy coated both sides of the floor.. took 1 gallon of resin per side..

here some more pictures:

I decided to use is a Bulldog pipe frame hitch. Heavy duty with 2 5/16 ball size. The OD of the pipe was 2 1/4. I welded a short sleeve of 2 1/2” schedule 80 pipe on top and then a sleeve of 3” schedule 80 pipe. both sides are welded solid. this was a tight fit, but worked good.. Both sleeves brought me up to the 3 1/2” ID of the pipe frame.. The assembly was then welded solid to the frame.. this should hold the camper i guess ... tomorrow i will clean up the welds and paint the hitch.. then i start assembling the floor and work on the new c-channel this weekend..

as usual, i keep the pics coming:

Absolutely beautiful work!!! That has got to be about as good as it can get.
Your choice of the Bulldog coupler provides the period correct "streamlined look" with a very functional contemporary piece. Great execution!!
