'47 Clipper For Sale in Austin - Someone Rescue It!!!

I just came across this posting for a '47 Clipper in Austin TX (posted yesterday):
Airstream 1947 Classic Curtiss Wright Clipper

Man, I'd hate to see one of those fall into the wrong hands; would love to see someone from here adopt it and bring it home! If anyone decides to go for it, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one here who'd love to hear about it. Anyone?? Anyone??

Don't get too excited

I saw this one for sale at the Good Guys show in Ft. Worth this year. I think a bomb blew off the front and it was repaired. Dents everywhere and floor shot. But, it is a Curtis under it all.

That's very sad to hear... certainly explains the price. I'm amazed at the motivation of some of the members here, so you never know whose ambition is going to take over the brain!

Thanks for the input; I still wish for the best for that poor thing!

Someone will do it

Yes, someone will probably jump on it...then the surprise to them at what it entails. I see it all the time with some of our great Airstreams. That's why we see many...many...for sale...now at the bottom of their value...maybe ruined forever...by well intentioned folks who jump in, strip 'em out and THEN see the cost/work/etc. confronting them in the face.

So sad... seems to be more prevalent in your neck of the woods. They're hard to come by up here... even junkie ones! We feel so fortunate we found our '67 fixer-upper near us. Up here in the "tundra", I suppose more frames just rot away beyond hope, so they're just not around. <sigh>

Hey...

Are you talking about us???

Wow, I'm not sure even we would have taken that one on. It definitely looks like a trailer that has been "married" with another trailer. And I don't believe the sellers at ALL when they say the windows don't leak... The windows on here are squared, where the early CWs were the rounded ones, so not sure about the "prototype" claim...

Poor thing, it's going to take a lot of time and $$ for that trailer. (That song from The Restoration of Birdy's video on YouTube keeps going through my head, it's gonna get bad before it get's better, it's gonna get worse before it get's real good, and it's gonna be a chain reaction... from AS member InsideOut. It's also in her thread It's a Girl!) I haven't been able to get that song out of my head every time I work on our trailer it's on continuous play through my brain!!!!

If the pipe frame did not break and damage the front end, then perhaps a former owner flattened the front end in order to install an operable window for ventilation that the fixed front "D" windows did not provide. It certainly looks that way from the outside. The "puffy" front end would nicely compliment a re-powered fat fender tow vehicle, making this the trailer of choice for the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Combo trailer?

I still think this may be a combo trailer, part AS part CW. I was on the forums this morning and on the side this part was displayed for sale by AS Member Kevin Barnes. I was comparing the two "clipper" photos - front window and back windows and the seam in the center of those panels do not match. So, if a PO bent/shaped them around, I would think there would still be the same number/style of panels. Who knows, I'm still a newbie around the forum, I just saw this part for sale and it kind clicked.

So, does that mean instead of a prototype it would be a limited edition of 1?

And if the Pillsbury Dough Boy isn't interested, perhaps the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man would be.
