2 AC units and boondocking w/ a generator?

Hi All,

We are happy owners of a 2015 FC 27FB with one AC unit. We have been largely using it during the swing seasons. We had our first hot summer camping this summer, and the one AC unit can't keep the bedroom cool. I understand it's a major mission to add a second AC unit to an existing trailer, so contemplating trading up to a 2020 with two AC units (and get the new Rear Hatch in the process). However, we do occasionally camp in state parks and areas with no hookups. Currently, we can run our one AC unit with a Honda 2200 inverter and East Start, which we installed. Here is my question... is there a way to isolate and run just one AC unit on a trailer with two units off a 2200 when boondocking? My service rep tells me we can't, and that we'd need two generators, which I find as a major oversight on the part of AS.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

We just picked up and used our 2020 30’ Bunk with two AC units and 50AMP. I know we can plug into a 30AMP service and just use one AC. I’d imagine this would be similar to your situation running off a generator.

We have two A/C's on our 2018 27' GT and we can run either one at any time or both, if we have enough power.

So I can't imagine why you would have to run both of them simultaneously on a 2020 model.

We have a 2018 Serenity 28 with 50 amp dual AC. No issue to run only one AC when on 30 amp or a generator

Your service rep is incorrect. You can definitely run one unit at a time with one generator. Running both at the same time though with your Honda is pretty unlikely

Hi

The two A/C units are independently controlled. You can run one in front, one in back, both or none. To fire up both at the same time (not your question...) you need something up in the 7KW class. To fully supply a 50A feed (never really needed with an AS) you need a 12KW generator.

Keep in mind that even with two A/C units, there still is some combination of sun, humidity, temperature, lack of shade, no awnings out, internal temperature target, ..... that isn't going to work out in the middle of the afternoon.

With both AC’s running we easily keep the camper at 70F all day long. And that is in GA or FL summer heat and humidity.

We feel your pain. We had a 25 FC FB. With one air. We live in the SW and traveled the SW NPs during summer. Never got cool. Yes we have ducted air. We explored having 50 amp conversion with 2nd air so we could run both simultaneously. At $10,000 plus quote from factory we opted for a 2018 27 FB Serenity with 2 ACs and the 50 amp service has been awesome. We have boondocked and with one 2000 Honda generator we run the air independently. It was a blessing in a National forest recently with temps close to 100. We have not installed easy start due to we still are under warranty. The benefit of the 50 is that when we have that service we can run the air and microwave simultaneously. I can have my sewing machine ( large computer that sews) running also. Draw backs. When we ask for 50 amp service and we are told a trailer does not need anything more than 30 amp. We have to tell them that we have 2 AC with 50 amp I have had some campgrounds argue with us that it is not possible. Idiots. We managed 2very tight and small sites in national forests. We have a 350 diesel6’ bed. Getting around some trees can be challenging. Another draw back. Rear door and we are often over the end of the site. Step stools needed. We absolutely feel the upgrade to a larger unit with dual air had been totally worth it. It is a personal decision and if affordable to you, consider the option. Just my personal opinion. Just getting a 2020 with one air will not solve your issues. Just come to the SW and we can show you. We will be adding a second generator soon

Thanks - this is really helpful to hear. And your trips through the SW are what I envision as well. We don't want to be relegated to just camping where it is not hot. I am curious how you can run one AC with a 2000 and no Easy Start, but it's obviously working for you. Not sure why my service rep is telling me it's impossible.

6300 watts
Wt = 200# , have to use a winch to load into truck bed, Use a Kawasaki Mule with a rope over a tree limb, travels there the whole trip. I like it better than carrying 2 generators. One tank lasts all day or night.
