Berry I only have one window that is just a bit troublesome. I also changed to the all chrome metal wit set screw handles from Vintage Airstream supply. Better clearance and look much better than the grey plastic ones.

Are the replacement metal ones really any different in their dimensions to the plastic ones?

Shade Interference with Window Lifts

You will probably hear more in the coming days but a report from a friend that just picked up a '17 is that their (AS) fix was simply to make the frames of the window shades slightly deeper so the handles don't interfere.

It would be a PITA but it seems a similar fix for 15/16's would be to put spacers between the frames and inside skin so they sit a bit further out then they do now.

That's not what I want to hear!,

Neither shaving the knobs.

I already have gaps that let light in when they are suppose to keep it out. So shimming is not pleasing, and labor heavy. But, a complete change out of or "shimming" every window is not appealing either.

I just want to open the windows without trouble of further damaging the blinds.

A few options;

1. Shaving knobs
2. Cutting shafts
3. New metal knobs, as done by previous poster.
4. Shimming shroud.
5. Replace shrouds with proper 2017+ proper "engineered" fix.
6. Live with it and have them replace as needed.

Any other options?

Glad to hear AS finally fixed this. It only took until the third year for this version of the Classic for somebody to do something. This was mentioned publicly to the Airstream folks at Alumapalooza in 2015. As far as a retrofit to the 15's and 16's (and I guess a few 17's as well), they will never spring for modifications to our trailers. I had an issue with the front right curved accordion shade. That shade comes as a unit from Airstream at a cost of around $1500., as the shade and valence are "inseparable." My dealer fixed it in about 20 minutes (thanks, Terry!). I still wonder how the original design of the interfering window lifts left the prototype phase without resolution before the trailers went into production back in 2014.

Good point on the gaps.

Do the metal knobs actually help....beyond aesthetics?

I'd spring for the metal knobs if it works for me. Only need a dozen at $5 a pop.:~

Just noticed also that in the rear with twin beds, the shroud runs behind the shirt closet above the foot of the beds. It would be hard to shim that.

Knob?

Would someone please be kind enough to list the part# for the vintage knobs? I looked at their website to no avail. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just ordered 18 metal knobs. I really like the set-screw method. Plastic knobs that pull off are a no-go.

Add a drop of LocTite 242 MEDIUM (not the red stuff, think this is blue). While I haven't had a lot of issues with the set screws loosening when I find one loose now a do a 'little dab will do ya' with LocTite.

Since we full time I have been cutting the plastic ones down. Almost have them to where they don't hit the blind. Could use a few of the original ones to do some heavy cuts on. If you want to give them up for the experiment let me know

Chrome Handles Installed!

I ordered 18 of the chrome knobs from Vintage AS and installed them all this past weekend. Added blue locktite to the setscrews as recommended. They look much nicer and match the latches. I still have a little bit of interference with a couple of the shades. Nothing serious that we can't live with. All in all, I would say a worthwhile project! Thanks for the info!
