Flight of the AirDreamers / Preflight checklist

We will be picking up a brand new 2019 Classic 30 from the dealership in about a week. Some here have shown interest in me following up on the process of getting a new AS and of course, the new 2019 Classic with all the smart electronics and new 3020 Alde system. I thought it more appropriate to start a new thread to accomplish this.

A little background. My wife and I owned a 2017 signature 27’ for almost 2 years. I had done extensive modifications to it and well, just loved messing with upgrades. We were very happy with it and loved the freedom to go on long and short trips. We knew we were loving the AS life. We put a classified ad here on Air Forums and she sold in two days.

http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/...nal-27-ohio-2/

After our last and longest trip, we decided that we wanted to make traveling in our AS a priority in our lives (as many of you have done) and we made the decision to sell our beloved Signature and move up into a Classic. I had heard about the new “smart” trailer from an article from the May 2018 AS dealer meeting in Las Vegas.

http://www.rvbusiness-digital.com/ju...18#&pageSet=41

I knew I wanted to wait for the 2019 model year.

Our trailer just came off the line last Wednesday (9-12-2018) and was moved to another building to add the last items such as side valances and ocean air curtains. Today it is still waiting there and has not been released for shipping. A call to my salesman Bruce and his call to Tim at AS and we found that it was missing two upper cabinet doors. They should arrive today from the plant that makes them in a nearby city and the “AirDreamer” may begin its first flight today or tomorrow on a flatbed truck to Ft. Myers Florida.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

That sounds very exciting. Please keep us updated, and provide us some pictures of the new baby's arrival.

I will. I also plan on doing a few videos I will be able to link here.

My wife Doty (she hasn't posted here yet) and I have removed everything from the original trailer, sorted and made the decision whether to keep or leave home. Although we have more space in the new trailer, we knew that kind of thinking would get out of control. As the time to leave has come nearer, "other" items have crept into our pile of keepers, but nothing too extravagant. My 8" Celestron telescope and mount added about 70 lbs. so the new portable printer and craft equipment my wife has added compensates!

The 30 Classic has a payload of 2200 lbs. I believe we are about 670 lbs. so far. I have not shared that number with the wife as we will lose several drawers to a growing collection of shoes! Hold on! She just added the Vitamix blender to the pile. Oh wait, that may be a good thing! 🍹

We, of course, are in NE Ohio and our dealer is in Ft. Myers requiring us to rent a 6 x 12 U-Haul trailer to take all our stuff to Florida. The trailer I opted for has dual axles and is covered. I had to buy a 2" ball as everything I have is either larger or smaller.

Our tow vehicle is a 2017 Ford F-250 diesel. Plenty for all I need. I should not have any issues with the U-Haul.

We will be staging all our "stuff" in the garage today and I will get some pictures just to see how much junk we all fill our trailers up with!

Here is my pre-flight checklist that I will be going over with the dealer and later in the campground we are staying at. If anyone has anything to add, let me know. We have a site next to my salesman Bruce and his wife. We will stay as long as it takes to get things in order.

I hope we are still friends by the time list is over!

Here is my list:

Forgive me if I missed it, but I didn't see furnace. I guess Alde is used in lieu of?

Stove hood fan...and all exterior running lights, tail lights, awning light, porch light. Door bell?

Yes, the Alde system replaces the furnace. At least we hope so.

I just have outside lights so I will expand that to what you added.

Hi

We just rumbled down the road and after a bit pulled into a dump station at the next campground. On that drive we had all tanks full. That's 130 gallons of water at 8.2 pounds per gallon. That's 1084 pounds of water out of the 2,200 pound "payload" number on the trailer. Hopefully we didn't have more than 1115.8 pounds of beer onboard at the time ... .

======

On the magic checklist:

Check all external storage door latches to make sure they are snug (they tend to unscrew ...).

Check tire pressure

Check converter function (battery voltage on converter without solar > 13V)

Check all speakers in the sound system (=get real close to each of them)

Check the Alde fluid *after* it's been run for a bit and *after* the air has been bled and *after* you check the speed setting. (it's only one check, it just needs to be at the bottom of the list not at the top).

Fridge seems to be missing from the list .... (needed to chill beer ....)

Put in some water in the tank and make sure the water pump works.

Lots of fun !!!!

Wow! Good point.

I've always tried to run with about 30% Fresh and no grey and no black to start. I may run to the scales with the U-Haul before and after filling just to get an actual measurement of my "stuff". Currently, I am guessing that once this "stuff" is in the AS trailer, it will add 775.5 lbs. Some of this goes in the truck bed.

Oh by the weigh! What figure did you use for a gallon of (blank)!

Doty laid out some packing blankets to the floor size of the U-Haul we rented. We just wanted to see how we were going to organize things in the U-Haul.

The other picture is the pallet that will go in the back of the u-haul. I'm guessing I will be heavy enough in the front.

Maddie will ride with us!

Hi

I just assume it's all water. I've .... errr ... never bothered to weigh a gallon of it

Another thing to consider - you do want some margin in your numbers. You won't always be running with full tanks. You probably will not have 16 cases of wine loaded up for every trip. The margin may go in different directions on different adventures ....

Congrats!
A nice place to stay around Ft. Myers is the Koreshan State Park, down in Estero.

That does look nice. We have a booking at Seminole Campgrounds across the river from North Trails Rv. It will be a time for a lot of work to be done setting up things, installing an Easy Start, and general testing of everything.

I just heard from Airstream and the trailer is still in Ohio!

They are missing one more part which they said is coming in today, and then it has an express order to get it on its way. We will take our good old time going down as we certainly don't want to beat it there. AS said they will inform the dealer when it ships. Oh Boy.

Well, it's the end of the day and no word on our trailer shipping. The dealer told us to come on down anyway and that they are pretty confident it will be on its way.

Anyone got a hotel in Ft. Myers that has great weekly rates?

I found a good rate at InTown Suites Fort Myers for a blues show that I'll be attending over there next year. I went through Priceline, got the room for $42/night. It took some doing- the room rates around there are very pricey!

If you followed one of the other Classic threads you know that AS finally finished our trailer. It is currently in Quality control for a go over. Should ship from now to Monday.

We are relieved to say the least. Uhaul has been great to extend our time and AS came through in a pinch.

We will now be leaving in about a week to give it time to ship and for the dealer to give it it's blessing.

Although you've had an AS prior I would suggest a request be made of the dealership to do a "walk thru" with you. Include as their representative the sales person AND a technician familiar with your unit. Video everything they tell you. Make sure they turn on the Alde, run it for a while, the heat aspect may not kick on as it's hot where you are picking it up, but at least make sure you have hot water and plenty of it.

Enjoy

Bud

It's funny that now the time is getting close to picking the trailer up, I told my salesman Bruce that I know it is not going to be "perfect" so don't expect any drama from my wife and I if we find something. He said, "My guys will make this "perfect" before you get here".

He's a great guy (Bruce Miller) and I know that they will try their best.

We are staying in Ft. Myers for a week to install a few items and to do a full shakedown myself.
