Classic 33 Macerator Toilet

About to purchase a Classic 33. To existing owners, how do you find the macerator toilet? Tips and tricks for using? Differences from regular gravity toilet?

Many thanks.

Some of us have them in our class "'b's" and some in their trailers. It usually is only necessary to "transfer" waste from a distance to the black tank location. Not required when the toilet is located directly above. So the toilet still works like a toilet, the macerator is just a transfer system.

In my case, it's all I've known so it works fine. Someday, of course, the pump will have to be repaired or replaced. Not a big enough deal or worry to get the floor plan you want.

Some will say they take more water, but I don't see why this is true. You use more water for #2 than #1, but this is always the case regardless of which toilet system you have.

No complaints here. I think it works great. The ability to add more water to the bowl is a plus in my book as more water is helpful in the flush at times. Good luck.

We just pick up our 33FB on 2 July and so far we like the toilet. Pull the handle up to add water and down to flush. Since the waste is pumped to the black tank it has a light on the wall that lets you know the tank is full and won't pump additional waste into the tank till you drain your black tanks. Same rules apply about putting stuff down the toilet that does with a standard drop toilet.

In my signature, I post the tongue before putting any of our stuff was loaded in the AS. The Dry weight is off the tag on the side of the AS. We haven't weight since and won't till our next trip.

Mick,

We upgraded to a 2019 33FB and love it. No issues with the toilet at all. Just a little bit more explaining when guests use it.

Good luck!

Rick

We would agree completely. Indeed I would arfgue that it is superior as there are fewer ‘lumps’ in the tank to harden or otherwise cause a problem. Almost pure liquid comes out of the black tank.

The macerator toilet works well enough (I have one in my 26U). It seems to make the black tank quicker to rinse to the point that the water coming out is visually clear. The downside IMHO is that it uses a LOT more water than a gravity toilet. With a gravity toilet I always filled the gray tank faster, even when dumping sink water down the toilet, etc. Now the black fills a bit faster than the gray.

We previously had a 25’ Flying Cloud - we love the macerator toilet in our 33.

Any changes in the chemicals that are used? On simply flush a packet of chems?

I'm not sure I'd feed the packets to the macerator. That plastic may gum things up for a while before it breaks down. I still use the regular Thetford deodorizer/enzyme liquid but I wonder if I really need it.

If we upgrade to a 33, we'll be new to the macerator concept. From what I've been reading, there are two different things carrying the moniker "macerator":
1) a macerator toilet, which I believe chews everything up at the toilet then pumps it to the black tank (which may or may not be directly under the toilet). After that, the flushing process is more or less standard, using gravity through a 3" flush valve and hose;
2) a macerator pump, which chews everything coming out of the black tank. From the toilet, it is just a gravity drop into the black tank. But then the black tank flush is actually a pump-out, which can use a smaller hose over a longer distance (even uphill?).

I guess you could have a toilet AND pump that are both macerators... but haven't heard of that yet.

It seems the 33 has the macerator toilet, but not the pump. If I made sense here, please confirm. Thanks.

There are also two flush cycles. By holding the handle down for 5 seconds or so you can switch between using a half gallon or a full gallon per flush. We use the lesser amount and if we need to supplement the water use the water from the shower we capture in a gallon container while the water is getting warm.

Dometic 8700 manual

6.2.2 Changing flush modes
Dometic 8700 series MasterFlush toilets offer two flush settings to help manage water consumption:
Normal flush – Uses 0.85 gal. (3.2 liters) per flush. Adds water to bowl after every flush.
Dry Bowl flush – Uses 0.45 gal. (1.7 liters) per flush. Does not add water to bowl after flush.
To change from Normal to Dry Bowl flush setting, press “Flush” switch for about five seconds. When “Power On” light (fig. 4 3) begins flashing, release “Flush” switch. Flush mode has been changed to Dry Bowl setting. Change mode to Normal flush by following the same procedure.

Can I ask how loud they are? As one that needs a nightly trip to the bathroom would not want to wake the others. I'm sure its different but the macerator on our boat is as loud as a garbage disposal.

Hmm, not sure what to compare the noise to. I would say it’s no louder than water pump coming on (with silencer kit installed). Also depends on if bathroom door is shut and where others are sleeping (dinette or couch vs bedroom). I agree with all the previous comments on the thread. Dometic does not recommend use of the pods as the casing may not dissolve all the way. I use Odorless liquid brand and it seems fine and no smells. When flushing black tank the water runs clear after a rinse or two. I use standard 3 inch hose to empty but also have 3/4 garden hose I hook up when just emptying grey tank. Never tried emptying black tank with the smaller hose but I suspect it may get clogged and not willing to try just in case. Overall, very pleased with the system and closest to the residential system in the house.

Close the lid before you flush quiets it a lot.

Ours (Dometic Sealand 8100) is only slightly noisier than a regular house toilet flush (nothing at all like a garbage disposal. Plus, we don't flush every time at night. But we start with a good amount of water in the bowl to begin with and can usually make it until morning to hit the button.

We have had ours for a couple of years and do not find the toilet that noisy. I agree that it is much more similar to the toilet we have at home compared with the toilet we had on our Flying Cloud.
