2017 Power Awning

4:30AM, sound asleep, both of us. Power awning not opened, nor has it been used since August 30th 2017. Power awning opens, hits a tree and tries to keep opening. Finally stopped, would not retract. Then it did retract. I went up and disconnected the power to the awning. I'll call Zip Dee, but any similar experiences and if so solutions.

I thought the newer awnings have a kill switch..... I do on my 2016. I always leave the power off until I use it.

We have a 2014 power awning. Ours rolled out about a foot and stopped. I worked with it for about an hour and could not get it to budge. I decided that I would have to get out the manual and figure out how to manually retract it. I went to bed with it still stuck out. The next morning, I went outside to work on it and it had miraculously retracted sometime during the night. I learned two lessons from this:
1. Never have another power awning.
2. Learn ahead of time how to retract this thing manually as a precaution.

A few weeks ago my awning seemed to lose its memory of the retract/extend points. I resolved it by turning the nylon hex adjustment screws near the motor. They tend to be hidden under the insulation sleeve.

Zip Dee recommends having a power kill switch. Airstream neglected to install them. Have one installed to avoid unwanted starts. The power awnings have a remote control option so I imagine a rogue signal could activate the motor. Come on Airstream!

Ok Guys, how, exactly how, do I kill the power to the awning. Even if the chance is small, I do NOT want this to happen ever. If I end up haveing to manually open the awning from now on I would rather do that than to have it deploy all on its own.

2017 Power Awning

I maybe able to help you. On my 2016, the control board is under the sink. The power supply is on the bottom right on the board. You can unplug it there. You can also wire in your on/ off switch to the hot side.

I put the switch on mine on the cabinet side below my awning controller.

I'd be very interested to learn if there is an Airstream-issued recall, technical bulletin, maintenance certificate, or other notification and resolution of this apparent manufacturing problem.

Bud(Paiceman),

I have a 2017 Classic with the power awning. My electrical safety lock works sometime and other times it does not. Please post your solution so we can all learn.

Folks. Yesterday I discussed the "auto" opening of our 2017 Power Awning at 4:30am. The awning had not been used or opened since August of 2017. The Firefly lock switch had not been pushed to release. This opening was performed without any human or animal action, the Firefly or Zip Dee control board initiated the action. I called Airstream, "I have never heard this before, could be Firefly or control board". Called ZipDee, same response, except, "Airstream does their own thing thru the Firefly, if you had the ZipDee switch I could help you isolate the issue" . ZipDee conclusion, it's the Firefly. Called Airstream back, a different customer service rep, same answer, except you need to get to an Airstream dealer. No chance, the warranty policy of Airstream required dealer to assess, then contact Airstream for approval, then if approved wait for parts. This is 1970s, warranty policy, I know as the companies I was GM at changed ours from this to a customer centric system giving dealers virtual autonomy in warranty decisions but requireing large parts inventory and lots of documentation. So, made an appointment for end of March at JC sort of on our way home. In the meantime, I pulled the power plug on the awning control board and thereby eliminating any opening, plus after all this and the awning closed on it's own it would no longer operate at all. That's the full summary, not blaming Airstream or ZipDee, however, when we get to JC we are either going to have them install a ZipDee Relax control switch or take the awning off and put on the manual style, which I much prefer.

Thanks. 2017 must have changed, our power is on the other side and our controls are thru the Firefly, which I don't care for and could be the issue.

ZipDee says it's probably the FireFly as did one CSR at AS. Guess we will find out the end of March.

Thanks guys, and thank you Bud. I was able to pull the power for the awning. I will be heading to JC in March and I will have them take any corrective action at that time. I have NOT had any unintentional deployment but I didnt want to even that could happen.
Again, thanks to all for keeping an eye out on me. It really makes me feel great to have so many people just taking the time to make sure I am ok. Deeply grateful.

I will post the results. Jus for s and giggles I hooked the control panel back up a bit ago, it powered up, but nothing from pushing the Firefly buttons.

Interesting, will need to look into this. I do know on our 2017 Classic when the awing is out and titled down at the door, the door can only be opened maybe a 1/3rd as the door "hits" the awing.

Best regards and safe travels

What started as an awning issue as posted a month ago has now grown to 17 items on our punch list for our factory visit March 21st. I am not an engineer, electrician, however, most of these issues are all functions accessed thru the FireFly. Latest, monitor shows 30% fresh water tank and yet zero water in the tank, plus at same time I noticed this neither FireFly buttons works or the pump itself is broken. As an aside, prior to the start of this trip on 1/10/18, everything worked fine. Oh, and awning now functions?

Firedog, will do. Last time I was at factory they allowed "watching", so I plan on it this time.

What is the Firefly?

These posts surely have me worried! We just purchased a 2018 AS with power Zip Dee awning. I have only used the awning for practice in the driveway, but it works as advertised. I have a control panel with an on/off switch. Is this a master which will prevent unwanted operation?
