1939 Clipper

We now have a 1939 Clipper. It has been said that Wally didn't make trailers in 1939- but ours was titled in 1939 (maybe built in '37 or '38). It was originally owned by the Farr Brothers (a country music group that sang with Roy Rogers). The trailer was gutted when we got it, but had quite a few original parts- the kitchenette, faucets, window screens & pulls, wood trim pieces, cabinet hinges and handles, and some NOS aluminum sheeting (to fix the hole in the front). We are going to restore it to how is would have looked in 1939- no toilet or shower in this trailer guess we will have to camp next to the bath house. Anyway- it will be at Vintage Trailer Jam (Colin will be taking it on our behalf) this summer. We are still in the process of working our way through CA DMV to find out its succession of owner via the title. If anyone know anything about the trailer or has seen a similar one we love to know! It looks just like the '37 Clipper on Airstream Archives- which makes us wonder if the years are correct. So here are some pictures- we will post more as we progress.

Great find!!! After looking in the Silver Palaces book which shows a 1936,they look a lot alike, however the 36 shows a different configeration of tail lights. Congrats on your find. Dave

The '36 rear end comes to much more of a point than this one does. Also the rear taillight on ours is incorrect and should be a single little light.

Wow, that's the first pre-war one I've seen, how cool is that body!?

The two windows in the front made me first think of Batman or something. Quite ominous...

I can't wait to see your progress as you re-do it.

Looking good! How long did it take to get that far, and what are you using for this cut of the polishing (tools and product)?

Andy did the rear in about 2 hours- I spent 3 1/2 hours yesterday and got the side almost done. My back and shoulders are a little sore today. We are using a Dewalt rotary polisher and Nuvite- grade "C" right now. For 70 years old it is polishing really well. I worry this trailer will make us think polishing is easy and we will be in for quite the surprise when we go to polish the 30' trailer. This trailer is also much shorter than the "newer" ones so its easier to reach. Andy doesn't want to get on the roof of this one- and shouldn't have to once we set up some scaffolding to polish the top. Although I don't think we will get much further on the polishing till later this summer. We go to pick up the '67 and '61 this weekend from Colin- and we are going to leave this trailer with him to bring to Trailer Jam on our behalf. So I don't think we will get it back until August sometime.

This just in from Craigslist London!

Would this be the very same Clipper? Or is there really another one out there?

On edit... it appears to have the same World's Fair license plate, so it must be the same trailer?

Very Rare 1939 Airstream Clipper travel trailer.

This is your chance to own a pre-war "Aluminum" Airstream that is straight, yet in need of a restoration. Trailer has the cat eye windows with roll up side windows & a 1939 California Worlds Fair license plate. Be the only ONE to roll up at your trailer show in a pre-war Airstream Clipper! Make no mistake this is a RARE Airstream which is coming up on 70 yrs old & can be purchased for a fraction of what a "new" Bambi will cost you AND you wont see another one on the road anywhere!
Take advantage of the low US dollar & have a one off Airstream! 14K or trade for old Austin Healey, Jaguar or other European sports car or ?????. Serious only please, thanks!

That is our trailer- it just has not been pulled from Craigslist yet. There is only one other out there that we know of and its listed as a 1937 Clipper on Airstream Archives- Vintage Airstream - '37 Clipper
