Solar panel choices?

Hello New Airstream Family!

We recently purchased our first AS, a 2018 International 25FB and this is my first post. Absolutely love this and appreciate all the tips, ideas, problem solving, etc., this forum has to offer. We have learned a lot and was able to anticipate and overcome many rookie mistakes so far.

We purchased our AS at a dealership and found the one we wanted on the lot. When we drove away from the dealership we were still considering solar panels. The dealership made it sound like only an AS dealer or the factory could install them since the unit is pre-wired. I didn't think much of that until I called to make an appointment and they are booked out until July and would need the AS for at least a week. The cost also went up $400 in less three months, so it sounded odd.

Can we go anywhere and use any brand, model? If so, any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

You can use what ever you like. AM solar and Lewster on the forum are great resources.
I used Renogy 100watt panels and Victron controller for my install.
Check out AM solars website.
Factory system is not what you want

Yes, you can go anywhere, and use any 12v panel.

Before deciding on a system, I suggest reading up on the subject first. The Fit RV's "How Much Solar Do I Need" blog post and AM Solar's "RV Solar Education" are a good start. They'll give you a good understanding of what goes into a solar system, whether solar is even right for you, and how much you might need.

If you haven't done much camping yet in your unit, I'd suggest you do as much as possible before investing in too many upgrades. That'll give you a better idea of how you want to use your Airstream, and what the right upgrades will be.

I have a 2017 International with the 160 watt factory solar. I admit, I was not very educated about it. However, great advice about use your AS for a while and decide how you want to use it. Some folks like the off the grid boon docking which offers a compelling argument for a robust solar capability. In other cases having the factory system is good enough. I would offer that if you can accept the significant cost for a state of the art solar capability it offers you a lot of flexibility to use your AS in any way you like.

I subscribe to Trailer Life magazine. I find it informative about issues that are common to all rv's. Also, they review various trailers and accessories such as solar, wi-fi etc.
