25FB Serenity Laminate Roman Gold to Asian Sand

I LOVE our new 25FB. The only thing I absolutely did not like about it was the rust color ‘Roman Gold’ laminate accent wall. So... it had to go. I have never worked with laminate before but it turned out perfect. So for anyone that dislikes it as much as I did, you can fix it too.
I ordered a Wilsonart Asian Sand 4x8 sheet in high gloss from Lowes for $100. It was not in their system (textured ‘liniarity’ is the standard finish) so huge shout out to Poway CA lowes for making sure we ordered the correct finish from their distributor. Lowes is amazing.
What is really cool about this is that once you remove all of the screws, the pantry cabinet slides easily out from between the kitchen cabinets and the bathroom wall. It was like a 10 minute pretty easy removal process.
Remove all of the white headed screws inside the pantry to detach it from the bathroom wall.
Remove the microwave convection oven by taking out the 4 screws in the aluminum trim and sliding it out.
Remove the screws inside the microwave nook(?) to detach the kitchen cabinet from the pantry.
Remove 1 screw in the lower cabinet below microwave.
Trickiest part... there is a screw between the stovetop and microwave nook that you can’t get to from behind the microwave. I do not know how to remove the stove top. But I was able to lift it and the counter high enough on that corner to get a screwdriver inside. That screw was NOT replaced on reinstall. If anyone wants details I can add more pictures later.
Once home I sanded the laminate all the way to the brown core to ensure adhesion with 80 grit and an orbital sander.
Pulled off the front edgebamding carefully for regluing later. This wilsonart pearl bisque edgebanding was only available on special order in 15,000 linear feet. So be careful. (My backup plan was going to be to beg Airstream to sell me 7 feet)
Rough cut the laminate to allow an inch or two overhang.
I used two coats of the red can contact cement on the cabinet and 1 coat on the new laminate. Waited 15 minutes. Used dowel rods in between to get it lined up, then stuck it down and ran a roller over it.
I love projects where I get new stuff. I got to buy a router and it is awesome.
After routing it with a flush trim bit, I cleaned the old glue off of the edgebanding with acetone and reglued with contact cement.
Install was easy as sliding it into place and putting a dozen or so screws (minus 1) back in.
Next I will be removing the upper kitchen cabinet to de-rustify the end by the door. I will update this post when it’s done.
Really was a satisfying project. Highly recommend if you do not like the accent wall and you are a little handy.

Nice project... Great craftsmanship, and a great - and super-informative - post.

Hey thanks, that’s really nice of you to say. I tried editing my ramblings above to make it a little more coherent, but apparently we can’t edit after 30 min?

Finished!

Well I was worried that I was probably going to have to remove the whole upper kitchen cabinet in order to laminate the end. But... it turns out the laminated end cap piece is just held on with a few screws. So i was able to wrap this project up pretty quick.
End cap:
Remove the aluminum edge trim.
Remove the key hooks.
From inside the upper cabinet:
Remove the right divider panel in order to..
Remove two screws holding end cap on
Then from inside at the top, press on the back of the end cap to push it out of the cabinet.
Laminated just as before:
Sanded off Roman Gold finish down to the brown core.
2 coats contact cement.
Route edge and reinstall.
And this was so much fun and I have so much Asian Sand laminate left... I think I could make shelves or a remote control holder or something...

Wow this turned out really nice, great project. I've always wanted to get a piece of laminate to matched my trailer and build something. This just reenforced how possible it is. Thanks for sharing!

Great! We have a signature but this helps me plan wire routing for a battery monitor I want to mount on the upper cabinet surface that you refinished.

How did you find the name of the laminate you ordered? We are buying a Signature. I’m curious as to how I could find more of that type of laminate.

Excellent job by the way!!

The ‘Roman Gold’ laminate accent walls are one of our favorite features in our 2017 25FB Serenity. Maybe Airstream should give accent wall choices.
