TinkersToy, I have a 2017 22FB and am interested in the details of your bumper upgrade. I am a do-it-yourself-er, but I don't weld. Did you install the bumper or have it done? Thanks!

The other thing I happened to notice when following my friends Airstream is the turn signal and brake bulbs are the same. In other words when turning and stopping at the same time all the person behind you sees are brake lights. So putting on the flashers when backing won't work if you use the brakes at all.

American cars used to be set up this way. It was before they had 4-way flashers. If you were turning, the turn signal light was the brake light. The bulb on one side would flash while the other side stayed bright. When 4-way flashers came along, American cars would flash the brake lights, unless you stepped on the brake, then they just stayed bright.

Eventually, American cars adopted the European style of separate bulbs for the turn signals. Then, if you had the regular trailer lights you had to get an adapter for your car to send the turn signal voltage to the brake light bulb on the trailer, and the car and trailer bulbs blinked 180 degrees out of sync.

With the understanding that the bumper was designed to hold the backup lights and camera and not for protection, I used 3 aluminum splines from my old tonneau, some aluminum angles and L bars, and SS carriage bolts I assembled the bumper, attached the lights and camera and bolted to the trailer frame. I bought the lights on Amazon (Blazer B669BU Back-Up Lamp Chrome Bezel) photo

All the rational why we wired and added our own.
Posted this year ago but for fresh viewers decided to not put non standard lights or holes in the shell / bumper. Crafted simple aluminum backing L bracket behind license and very bright water proof LED Bar. Brought wiring from nearby inside hatch courtesy light adding flush manual switch also a long range wirless Fob receiver. Allows on / off for backing up, breaking night camp lighting, emergency road hazard lighting and scare light triggers while sleeping. All without needing truck attached or being in "reverse".

Concealed, Very bright and more useful than just reverse lighting.

So does the non-classics have the reverse wiring from the pigtail into the junction box?

Playing on Vantairs idea, it would be easy to mount to vertical light elements alongside the license plate, which most people would interpret as backup lights rather than general lighting.

Have them as standard on my excella. Use them every time I back up in the dark!

Since I posted on this thread earlier , I've been looking at other newer trailers and they also do not have back up lights.

So the mystery is solved . They are not required by law on trailers anymore as Protaginost sited the FMVSS 108 .

They are optional .
