Square Airstream???

I ran across this add on Craigslist. I never knew Airstream made an Avion like squared off body style. Are these really rare?

We see them quite often out west. Mostly in people's yards wasting away. Pretty sad. Now, if I was looking for one to buy, we'd never see one!

They were made for one or two years. NOT an outstanding success. Most were fiberglass and Argosy's but I swear I've seen one aluminum sided Airstream.

To get more information - search "Squarestream" which is their informal name here.

And then for a real hoot search "funeral coach"

And if you've really got aluminitis - find "Airstream fifth wheel" which was actually more like a gooseneck - and HUGE.

It sounds like there are a few out there anyway. I was just surprised when I saw this. It was the first one I had ever seen. I am sort of new to the Airstream world though. Thanks for the information. I will search some of the keywords you suggested Paula.

If you are ever Airstreaming in New Jersey there is an Airstream park in the Cape May, NJ area called Jersey Shore Haven. Many long termers parked there and there are at least 2 Airstream 5th wheelers there. They are certainly an oddity but worth preserving in possible I think.

We own a 1987 Argosy by Airstream. Aluminum sides steel top. Looks like the photo except the color is beige. 71/2 ft wide but plenty of room. We're the third owner.

Saw one at Lewisburg. I think a couple from Quebec had it. Slightly different from the typical fifth wheel because the hitch was in front of the overhang rather than under it, but definitely not a gooseneck.

Ours is the aluminum with bonded enamel and vintage airstream inside. We LOVE it!

Check out DonMar RV in Maps.google.com

Check out how 11 can be seen in one place at
DonMar RV
Anyone looking for a project, they have multiple square aluminums to choose from.

They don't have them listed online apparently ... if the one on Pudding Swamp Road in South Carolina is the one you are referring to. Liked seeing your photo!

I have seen a couple of them in campgrounds and the like. They are rather unusual. And they are not recognized as the iconic Airstream shape.

I've never been in one. But certainly the square shape offers more interior volume for a given length. I sometimes say camping in an Airstream is like camping in a business jet. Gotta duck your head to wash dishes, or go outside.

I'm thinking of building a mold. And make one. I have enough of the original to make one.

I agree the square trailers in that photo are Spartans from the late 1950s/early 1960s, not "Squarestreams" from the late 1980s/early 1990s.
