VIN Search via WBBCI?????

We are having trouble locating the VIN on our "new" 1966 International Safari. The plate next to the door is missing, and we are unable to locate any numbers on the A frame. We were wondering if it would be possible to locate the VIN by researching the WBBCI number. The number on this trailer is 12883.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
David & Janet

Have you tried paint stripper on the tongue to see if under the many coats of paint the serial number is there? Sorry I'm no help on the WBCCI angle but someone might have info.

This will be a toughie since the WBCCI number pertains to the owner rather than the trailer and it's likely that the trailer has changed hands, possibly several times, in its lifetime. Streamer23 on this list has a pretty good file of member directories. Maybe he can tell you who the previous owners were, and one of them might have a record of the VIN number.

It is true that WBCCI asks for the serial number as evidence of Airstream ownership on their membership application, but I don't know if they keep that information once a member is signed up.

Both of our vintage Airstreams have a short number (4 or 5 digits) beaded on the inside of the "A" frame with an arc welder but it doesn't bear any obvious relationship with the trailer serial number. (I have always wondered what those numbers meant.)

I am sort of assuming the previous owner had a title--what does it give for a VIN number?

Good luck,
Nuvi

That number may have changed hands several times over the years. In many of the older trailers you can sometimes find the last 3 hand written on the bottom of draws and other removable items. It most likely helped the plant get the right stuff in the right trailer.

numbers

This might seem strange but on both the Airstreams I have restored the serial numbers were writen on the insides of the cabinets and on the boards for the beds. Seems this was there way of keeping things together.

Your best bet, is to remove the paint on the top side of the A-frame.
