Title: 1975 Airstream Excella 500 31 - California
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
Our trailer is a 1975 Excella 500. Its length is 31 feet. It is a mid-bath, rear bedroom model with a double bed in the rear. We bought this trailer from the owner of a restoration company who had already made several changes to the interior before we saw it for the first time. Let’s start a tour of the interior by entering the door and checking out this rig.
Looking forward from the door you will see a couch upholstered to match the Airstream blue rub strips on the exterior. Opposite the door you will note a foldout bed that will sleep two people upholstered in the same blue material. It will be hard to miss the hardwood floors that cover most of the trailer. The folding table setup for dining and social occasions is standard for this vintage.
Tambour doors and storage bins are original with the exception of a large tambour door concealing drainage and storage areas beneath the sink. A wine rack is standard as is an eight track tape player. Window coverings are venetian blinds replacing curtains of an earlier time. Two fabric shades in the kitchen and bathroom are exceptions. Looking aft you will notice a counter top made of a durable material by the restorer that surrounds the cook top and sinks. It matches the blues of the couch, fold out bed and blues on the overhead bins. The metal cover over the cook-top has been refinished. Across the way you will see a newer refrigerator that runs electronically on gas or electricity. Next to the refrigerator are original, ample storage spaces to hold anything the chef may desire. Paneling for storage areas is original and in excellent condition.
Let’s move on. Just after the kitchen starboard you will find a sliding door that closes off the rear of the trailer as well as another that keeps the bathroom closed off from people proceeding to the rear of the trailer. The shower enclosure itself is one we purchased about four years ago to replace an original that had major cracks in it. The area between the shower and toilet appears substantially the same as it did 41 years ago. On the opposite side of the trailer you will see more original paneling set up as a closet and drawers for storage .
The only significant change we made in this Excella 500 was to change to a carpeted bedroom. The heater works well, but who wants to roll out of bed to turn it on at the start of a frosty winter morning? The photos will attest that the bedroom is nicely appointed. Each of the commodes and lighting are original.
The interior of this trailer makes living in it for weeks on end very enjoyable. Our preference was to choose campgrounds that provide all the basics. We chose not to dry camp.
