1974 AVION La Grande 31
Built before the company was sold to Fleetwood Industries in 1978, the mid-1970s AVIONS were, and still are, the best live-a-board travel trailers ever built. Standard AVION features from this period include independent rear wheel suspension, the best Safe-Lite tinted glass money could buy, anodized aircraft aluminum skin which never needs polishing, indestructible “riveted” interior wall covering, and cabinetry more in line with fine furniture than an RV. The bathroom “end cap” inside is an expensive-to-build fiberglass insert encompassing the entire ceiling. Other standard AVION production features in the 1970s included sprayed on urethane wall and roof insulation (not saggy fiberglass), a thick layer of rigid “blue board” insulation in the floor, and special waterproof subflooring.
The two main steel frame members measure a full 6x2, as opposed to the 4x2 members on most other period trailers. Walking around the outside of this La Grande 31 finds a roomy, watertight storage box for the 110V cable and holding tank parts, heavy duty aluminum wheel wells with perfect edging, and totally straight side walls. The beefy rear bumper is made of 4.5” ID round steel and serves as basic rear end collision protection, as remote black hose storage, and as a spare tire carrier. Very nice. There is a 21x7 Zip Dee awning with a nice protective aluminum storage shroud. The body on this La Grande 31 is near perfect and has no dents of consequence in the under-belly. A massive aluminum rub rail runs around the entire body at chest height. The original fiberglass rock guard protects the beautiful curved glass from road debris while underway and, while parked, lifts to shade the entire front seating area. Capping it all off outside are four original, flawless AVION stainless steel hub caps, the original Coleman A/C roof-top shroud, power jack, and four original floor stabilizers in perfect working condition.
Inside, the cabin roof has two (2) over-sized, 18x18 hatch vents in the ceiling and a very slick wrap-a-round drapery system with drapery secured both top and bottom by clips on dual sliding tracks. There are also separate, gold anodized, solid aluminum curtain rods top and bottom for retaining white shears for daytime privacy in the campground. The original drapery, mattresses, and cushions will have to be replaced. The La Grande 31 was the top of the AVION line in 1974 and featured longer twin beds of 6’8” and 6’4” in length, and the special window in the entry door, as exclusive to the particular model. The original sofa and bed frames and window shears are still in good condition.
On the back walls behind the beds are the original mirrored “designer” glass is in mint condition. This “mirror effect” is a very classy touch and it makes the La Grande feel even roomier! The tub and shower surround is done in vintage avocado and is in superb condition with the original floral shower curtain and liner, rod, rollers, and mirror all in near perfect condition. There is a phenomenal amount of high-end cabinetry that I have just deep cleaned and refinished and to look almost new. Fine quality hinges, knobs, and hardware are everywhere. You just can’t get better cabinets short of custom. As to appliances, the original Dometic two-way, self defrosting refrigerator/freezer still takes things down to 35 and -5 degrees, respectively. The standard Magic Chef range is in good cosmetic condition inside and out and seems to work fine. The furnace works well and features three separate ducts.
This 1974 AVION La Grande 31 is offered for sale AS IS and without gas bottles or batteries; however, I am including a Reese tow package “sweetener” ($400 retail) consisting of dual torsion bars, 2 5/16” ball, and 2” hitch, as well as a full-size spare in good condition on an original AVION rim. This Reese tow package combined with the unit’s independent suspension makes for safe, easy towing. Due to its over-the-top quality construction, extra headroom, ample storage in top-of-the-line cabinetry, and extremely comfortable bathroom, this 1974 AVION La Grande 31 feels amazingly “at home” for long stretches either on the road or in the campground. And it NEVER needs polishing!
