Title:
1961 Airstream Bambi 16 - Oregon
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
Built in March of 61 this cute little trailer has had a long and varied life. It spent many years as a family camping trailer before being purchased by the Rogue Shoe Company here in Oregon. Rogue transformed it into a trade show piece, as a rolling exhibit for their products. It then was sold back into private hands and was converted back to a camping trailer.
It is now a highly customized show piece with all wood interior. The 16 foot length from bumper to tongue makes it cute as a button rolling down the road. The wood interior and design elements makes it a perfect little get away.
EXTERIOR:
The skin is in good condition for a 53 year old trailer with minor dents and dings around. The biggest dent is on the rear street side lower panel of the end cap where a fork lift driver hit it with a pallet in Rogue's warehouse. The eyebrow over the street side lower hatch is also fairly mangled. The windows all work properly and the glass is good. Some of the door jalousie slats are plexi. The door knob and lock work. The trailer has a new axle and good tires. It is ready to be pulled across country. The trailer has been polished, not a perfect mirror but shiny enough to blind tailgaters.
INTERIOR:
As mentioned the interior is done completely in custom wood work. Most of this work was done by Rogue with some more recent modifications, such as the bed and cabinet doors. To the front of the trailer is the bed. It is a twin, so sleeps one person or perhaps two very very good friends with little to no body fat. At mid ship on the street side is a dinette created from a 1950s dinner table with two chairs. The yellow 'cracked ice' design fits very well with the over all design. The curbside mid ship has a full length closet with double doors. To the rear is the kitchen with sink, fridge, microwave, and hotplate.
SYSTEMS:
There is no propane in this trailer, it was removed by Rogue to meet convention center requirements. The tanks on the tongue are decorative only. Hot water comes via an Insta-Hot heater located under the sink. There are no tanks and water is brought in from shore via a hose attachment on the street side. Water drains out at the center rear and can be attached to a drain line or used with the portable blue boy gray water tank that comes with the trailer. There is a battery system with an Inteli-Power 9100 converter for the
12v lights. The trailer has a standard 30 amp power cord and 15 amp adapter to plug into a household outlet. There are a number of electrical outlets throughout the interior providing ample spots to plug things in. The trailer has a nice exterior awning with poles. There is a Fantastic Fan roof vent for cooling. Again new axle with recently repacked bearings and good tires. There is no shower or toilet. A port-a-potty was used for late night emergencies and park facilities for everything else.
SUMMARY:
Is this trailer perfect? Heck no, there are issues as with anything 54 years old. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not, you can't please everyone. So what is it? It is a cute as a button teeny tiny Airstream that is an attention getting camp ready escape pod. First year of the Bambi model. 7 panel end caps.
Everything in the pictures comes with the trailer. Not pictured but included Blue boy tank, brand new (not installed) wall mount flat screen and DVD player.
