My wife and I have decided to part ways with our
1954 22' Airstream Safari; a truly spectacular and unique piece of Americana. She has been gutted, partially restored, and is ready for you to customize and furnish to your particular taste and style.
Why are we selling?
We purchased her with the goal of creating a one-of-a-kind guest house that could also be used to explore this great country. As is often the case, life has taken us in a different direction and the Airstream must be passed on to another fellow explorer.
Why is this model so special?
We looked at hundreds of Airstreams online and dozens in person and we felt that this was hands-down the best vintage Airstream we could find. Your criteria may vary, but this is why we decided to buy this particular model:
- Vintage: is there anything cooler than a vintage Airstream? The 1950's were truly the golden age of Airstream trailers. The craftsmanship is amazing and she looks great for being 60 years young!
- Length: 22' is the perfect size, it tows like a dream, can be maneuvered easily and is even allowed in National Parks (which is not the case with trailers over 25')
- Weight: vintage trailers are much lighter than newer models, so this can be towed with a wider variety of vehicles
- Blank Canvas: Why buy someone else's finished trailer when you can customize the interior yourself? The possibilities are truly endless.
What work has been done?
Countless hours have been spent getting this trailer prepared for the second phase of its restoration. In short, it's been taken down to the studs and painstakingly restored to a point when the cabinetry and mechanicals can be installed. Here is a somewhat complete list of work:
Electrical:
- Installed power for air, fridge, solar, water heater and furnace
- Installed cable coaxial at street side and outlet tv
- Corrected wiring for tail lights and markers
- Replaced marker lights
- Installed 110v X 7
- Installed switches for lights X3
- Installed 4 ceiling lights
Interior
- Removed existing finish floor (and ensured subfloor was in good shape)
- Fabricated new Marmoleum flooring (lightweight but looks like wood)
- Installed wall and ceiling insulation
- Installed new aluminum skin on side walls and ceiling ($$$)
Exterior
- Replaced broken windows
- Welded on new A-frame coupler and jack
- Waterproofed all seems with silver sealant (completely leak-proof)
Wheels & Suspension
- New 225/75 D 15 tires
- Degreased bearings and repacked
- Replaced worn leaf springs
- New vintage style rims
What's left to do:
To start, the end caps will need to be installed. From there, the world is your oyster. I've included the architectural drawings we were using as a guide but the options are limitless depending on your goals and intended usage.
History Bonus:
This particular Airstream was previously owned by an original member of the Wally Byum Caravan Club. The club number that previously adorned this Airstream was #123, signifying that this trailer is truly one of the original explorers. (Current trailer numbers are 30,000+.)
I did a little research and it was owned by a teacher from Long Island that logged thousands and thousands of miles with his family over many summers of travel. He was a contributor to some of the magazines that catered to travelers and truly embodied the spirit of the Airstream.
Final Note:
It's the most overused trope when selling something used, but we will no doubt regret selling this Airstream. We spent over two years searching for the right Airstream until this one came on to our radar purely by chance. The buyer has the opportunity to turn this blank canvas into a truly magical guest house, second home, office, or tool of exploration.
