Title:
1950 Airstream Flying Cloud 21 - Washington
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
Behold, the world's oldest Airstream Flying Cloud. A rare find and rare trailer in a most rare body stlye. The liner rear with the breadloaf front. So rare, the president of Airstream, Bob Wheeler chose this body style and commisioned David Winnick to design and build it for his personal use a few years ago.
The design goal on this
1950 Flying Cloud (serial # 7006) was to keep the antique look and light weight, but incorporate all the comforts of a new Flying Cloud, Airstreams' longest lasting nameplate. A new one is available anytime, the oldest known one is available once. We wanted the interior to be as open as possible, yet incorporate a large bed, closet, and bath with shower and airconditioning. Lofty goals for an antique trailer that never had tanks or a bath to begin with.
We started with an Engineer to design the frame incorporating the original pipe, yet strengthening the entire substructure. It turned out to be surprisingly simple using .049 2x4 steel tubing and adding only 110 lbs. Two 12 gallon grey tanks hooked together for 24 gallon, 10 gallon black tank and 20 gallon fresh water were added. We then replaced the entire floor with epoxy coated 5/8 marine plywood. Stripping the paint off all existing surfaces was next and leaves the bare aluminum look of today, but better and more interesting with all the soft, nonglare patina of 64 years of life. All new wiring in 110 volt and
12 volt with 55 amp 3 way charger/converter, Marinco marine twist lock inlet, Optima Blue Top battery, and all new exterior trailer lights and wiring. A full complement of led lighting on the interior completes the electrical including a cool Flying Cloud night light in the bathroom. The plumbing system has all new pex, 6 gallon hot water tank and all new fixtures. The bathroom/shower is remarkably comfortable for its size, due to excellent design.
We specialize in aluminum construction and cabinets and we feel it is of the utmost importance to keep these vintage trailers as light as possible. You wont find 3/4 particle board here, only aluminum and lightweight Eastern Hard Rock maple plywood finished with an exclusive 9 coat sprayed and rubbed gloss that rivals a Lear Jet or custom yacht finish. Note our georgous, exclusive reverse boat deck epoxy countertops. Lightweight engineered aluminum and maple doors that close with quality. Wine storage is in our exclusive round sink cabinet and on the upper cabinet end cap.
Sleeping for two is comfortable with an amost full width double bed with 8 bins of clothing storage underneath. The bin system makes for easy loading/unloading of clothing. A full length closet is nearby. Sleeping for two more people (if you like cozy) at the front comfy couch upholstered in glove soft pleather is available with just a pull. Also features underneath storage.
The kitchen features an unbelievable amount of counterspace and storage. A new gas cooktop, microwave, and 2 way fridge (gas/electric) complete the spacious galley.
As you bend over to enter the cabin through the desired door within a door, the look and shape makes you feel like you are entering the cockpit of an old airplane. We basically kept what you could be happy with old, and replaced with new all the features and function of new. That's what we do at
www.sagatrailers.com .... redesign the old beyond the available new. Priced at an irreplaceable bargain of $49995. We are only 300 miles from the port of Seattle and will assist international shipment.
