Staining the wood?

Would it be possible to stain the maple laminates in the EB a darker color? I'm sure I'm risking the ire of you EB owners, but I have a 19' 75th Winick Edition, and I really love the walnut cabinetry, but also love the EB layout. How substantial are those laminates?

Hi there. I believe the surfaces of our EB cabinets are not wood (more like a Formica or similar laminate with a maple color and grain) and therefore would not take a stain. Best, Joe

Can anyone else confirm whether the cabinets are real wood? I thought they were a maple laminate. Yes, a laminate, but still real wood.

Have you tried lemon or orange oils? It will darken any woods and give a nice sheen.

I was in our EB unit this morning and checked a few screw holes and exposed edges, confirming my belief that is surfaced with a thin, laminate material that resembles maple wood and not a wood veneer (that might permit staining). Best, Joe

Even if wood, you may find that there is some clear finish applied on top that would think would have to be completely removed in order for the wood to accept stain.

I recently experimented with a couple of pine curio cabinets I picked up that I thought did not have any topcoat.

I tried applying darker stains to the underside of a removable shelf and had no luck - It did darken, but the stain just dried on the surface leaving a sticky residue 0 it could not penetrate so it appears there was some sort of coating on the previously stained pine.
