Possible West Central Florida FOD Rally-April 2013

Hi,
To anyone out there in Florida, or surrounding areas. Trying to gauge interest in a April 2013 FOD Florida Rally at Fort DeSoto in West Central Florida.
Pinellas County, Florida, Park & Conservation Resources - Fort De Soto Park
Have just sent a message to the County Parks Department concerning the viability of even having a group of Airstreams in the campground. Don't know if they'll allow me to reserve a large number of sites ahead of time. If I have to, I'll take my day off next week to explore the possibilities available. Since I am a Pinellas County resident, I can reserve sites up to 7 months in advance, out-of-county is limited to 6 months in advance. Will check to see if there's a limit to how many I can reserve with my in-county status.
But first, love to see some responses to the thought of having a Rally in April.
Would love to have the Rally even earlier, but since February and March are big-time Spring Breaker and Snow Bird season, plus March 31 is Easter weekend, anytime 1st weekend of April on would be better at attempting to reserve campsites.
If necessary, I'll post my personal email and see if that would work better.
Anyone interested???
Thanks, Derek

Message to County Parks Administrator

Wondering if it's possible to even attempt to have a group camping experince at Fort DeSoto. I'm part of a group of Classic Airstream owners, and several of us from the Central Florida area are interested in trying to reserve about 5 to 10 sites sometime for April 2013. Realize that we're limited to reserving no sooner than 7 months in advance, so figure we've got plenty of time to start planning something like this. Are large groups discouraged from camping together? Has something like this been done before? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Derek Wilkins

Below is the response I received today concering use of the Ft DeSoto campground. Guess they're worried that we'll be a huge group, with lots of happenings at each and every campsite. From the only Rally I've been to, it didn't seem that there was a lot going on. Please read the response and see if you think this is feasible, or we should try for a different location.
Thanks, Derek

Dear Derek,
Our family camping area has a limit of six people per
campsite. We discourage group camping in this area. However, if you
reserve sites for each RV, you would be permitted to use the area.
Your bonding activities and meetings would need to be away from the
campsites so as not to interfere with other campers. The six person
limit on each site means no more than six people on a site at any time.
There are several areas within the day-use sections of the park which
could be utilized for group meals and meetings.

Any thoughts???
Thanks, Derek

Interesting... My guess is that if the Airstreams are more or less together, there wouldn't be much of an issue about the 6-per-campsite if 10 ppl happened to be gathered near one trailer (err... Airstream! Gotta remember the organizer is a moho guy) unless the park patrol are REAL sticklers. The downside appears to be that the day-use areas are somewhat remote from the camping area (looking at the park map.)

My opinion can be taken with a grain of salt, though, since that's probably out of range for me at that time of year.

Yes, I've forgotten to mention, day use areas are a bit of a drive from the campground. Still, with a bicycle (there are bike trails) it's not that far. All picnic areas, beaches and the Fort itself are at least a mile or so away from campground. I'll see if I can't get to park this weekend and see if anyone can tell me if there will be problems with 6 or more congregated at a site. My guess is the limit is 6 due to the folks who come with outdoor tv set-ups and have 20 or more to watch the game....

I just drove thru the park a couple of weeks ago and saw a pavillion in the camping area, not sure if it was the tent/popup area or the trailer/MH area. Derek, Not sure how far away it is from where we are meeting but we could go check it out on sunday maybe, they let you drive thru and check out the park. perhaps pick out some nice sites!

I"m guessing we are all RVers that just happen to be gay so I doubt we'll be up drinking and dancing all night disturbing people! I can't see how a happy hour or potluck with 10 people conversing would disrupt anyone!

Possible West Central Florida FOD Rally-April 2013

Greetings Derek!

I will be watching this thread very closely as by rally time, my partner and I hope to be relocated somewhere near Cape Coral. We are selling out our real estate in Illinois and are planning to relocate where we won't be faced with freezing winter weather on a continuing basis every year.

Kevin

P.S.: I am hoping that the year-round humidity in the Cape Coral area won't be any worse than what we have in Southern Illinois . . . I would much prefer semi-arid but my partner prefers tropical . . . .
