As a (straight) solo camper for four years before I met my now-wife, I never once encountered any problem. The only time it ever came up was when I was checking in at Cherry Hill Park near DC, and they said, "Just you and your wife?" "Just me, actually." Of course I still got charged the two-adult rate.

People working and staying in campgrounds were - and still are - always friendly to me. I've never had a problem with people coming by and striking up a conversation, Airstreamers and SOB owners alike. This is one of the things I love about camping.

Al Qauida plotter? alimony runaway?) ... but usually if I give em' my best smile, they're o.k. Never been turned away. I think I've come close a couple of times when I just didn't feel like shaving for a couple of days, but that "clean-cut Airstream image" has won them over every time!
To get an even wider variety of stares/reactions, try pulling into a commercial campground (or just about any campground for that matter) towing a 40+ year-old Vintage Airstream with a baby blue 30+ year-old Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. The inquisitive looks were rampant when traveling near high passes in the Rocky Mountains with the Vintage combination. Encountered more than a few shocked expressions from people in gas stations who couldn't believe that my Cadillac wasn't significantly modified from stock.

I am just starting to get accustomed to not being a Free Wheeler as I found my soulmate last October. Every now and again, I find myself answering one when the desk-clerk at the campground asks me about the number of adults in the coach - - - habits of a lifetime take some time to break, I guess . . . .

Another assumption is that all RV'ers are conservative. I've had many interesting and friendly conversations with conservatives, liberals and independents.

Gene,

You do realize you are our resident "republicrat".
When are you planning to announce?

Bob

very interesting thread. Guess I'll soon find out how I'm treated when I start getting the Airstream motorhome on the road. Single, plan on staying that way. My 'co-pilot' is my 6 year old Westie. Best co-pilot there is, no back talking, just plenty of 'kisses', lol!
