I have an older Verizon 3G device, the one that looks like a thumbdrive. The coverage area is quite broad, even in the hinterlands. My morning ritual involves coffee and online newspapers and other reading, so I prefer my broadband to unreliable or inconvenient wifi's at the parks or McDonalds/Starbucks. I find that if I connect the device to a pigtail, connect the pigtail to the computer, it allows me to place the little device on the window ledge next to my table, and I get reception where it wasn't availble when plugged directly into the laptop. In other words, virtually all the time. Since I'm now outside my contract commitment period, I suspend the service when not on the road, and save the $60/month. I turn it on during road trips, costing me $2/day during the trip, but nothing the rest of the year. Between that flexibility, and the fact that 4G is really not widely available, and I have no need for mifi, I'm not keen to upgrade and rekindle a contract commitment.
