FOD Friendly WBCCI chapters
Hey everyone,
Having the aistream now for about a week (still waiting for the title from the previous owner's bank to be delivered... grrrrr....) I am looking at the WBCCI membership options.
As I live in Pat Robertson country, I am naturally hesitant to blindly sign up for the local group without querying the overall FOD community (indeed, it may turn out that the local area chapters are amazingly tolerant and I am just being a self-minded putz.) I am curious to any reccommendations to either FOD friendly or FOD tolerant chapters I may investigate in the mid-Atlantic region (Va/Dc/Md/NC)?
This may be a good place to reply and promote friendly chapters elsewhere in the Americas to keep watch on for rallys, etc. to link together with whatever chapter I wound up working with.
Cheers,
Ian

The only requirement WBCCI NOVA has is to have fun.
It doesn't hurt if you know how to cook something great for potlucks thought!

Although I live in the SF Bay area, I did have to use Google to find out what I assume your use of "FOD" means. My recommendation is to go to one of your local chapter's gatherings and check out the situation for yourself. The worst that can happen is that you leave very soon.

Best thing to do is not go in with an attitude or be too defensive. All some peopleneed is an excuse, don't give them one. My wife and I treat people the way they treat us. We seldom have a problem even with differences in religion, politics, or sexual preferences. Hope you find a unit you like and have many years of fun camping. Give people a chance, maybe two, after that it is their problem, not yours. Peace, jim

There are FOD friendly units out there... Go to some ralies as guests and you'll find a unit you feel is a good fit where diversity and acceptance is the norm. That's what we did and the rest is history.

FOD tolerance
The US population is reported to be 7.5% to 10% FOD. Many chapters are likely the same. Most are accepting of FOD. Expect a few individual member couples to be FOD resistant. Ignore them. Have Fun with the rest of them.

All,
Thanks for the immediate and welcome replies; both here and in private. I think I know of a good way forward to start off with a base WBCCI membership and guest visit those in my area. Yes, I realize that the quality of my slow cooker beef and barley stew (potluck entree) will be put to the test by the very best of discerning boon dock palettes. I believe I am up to the challenge however.
Cheers,

I live in a rather conservative state myself, and we have yet to have anyone look askance at us at any Airstream gathering. Before meeting any WBCCI folks my partner and I wondered a bit what it was going to be like, but we happened upon a wonderful unit (if I do say so myself now, years later as unit VP!) and it's been a great experience since Day 1. If you were closer I'd tell you to come join the Heart of Texas Camping Unit and see what I'm talking about, but the basic advice is still sound. Many units that operate like ours will be glad to have you meet up with them for an event and see if you enjoy yourself before committing to join, but if you want to join WBCCI before settling on a unit, you could join as a Member At Large and choose to affiliate with a unit later on after you've camped with a few.
