Dinette Area as a Bed - 2011

Greetings-
Has anyone with a front bedroom (27' Classic Limited) found a sucessful way of creating a "sleepable" bed out of the dinnette??

Since the table does not come down to the level of the seat benches and with the "rolled" edges on the cushions, we are at a loss as to how to create a reasonable sleeping surface.

Any thoughts?
Bill

????

Can you post a photo or two? If the surface is just uneven and doesn't have major steps in it. Try an air mattress.

Thanks for the thoughts. I can not get a picture to include, but the table is about 2 " thick rather than the usual 3/4" and about 2" wider that the space between the benches - one of which has an one inch overhang.

The word from JC is essentially "OOPS", there is no way to fix the problem - engineering and production weren't in synch. It is an issue with which we will have to cope.

Other than that, we are in love with the trailer.

Thanks again,
Bill

I think the op is wondering how to deal with the rolled cushion edges as noticable in the following pic. Not sure those "humps" would bring about a good night's sleep...

How about rotating each of the seat cushions around (180 deg's) so that the "humps" are at the outside walls. Or switch the two seat cushions with out rotating, that would accomplish the same thing.

Looks ok to me...just spin the cushions... I don't get the problem...unless this is like the story of the Princess and the Pea.

As I look at your picture, it appears that your table lowers so that it is flush with the bench seat tops. My problem, in addition to the rolls in the cushions (that can't be flipped and fit the space due to the curve on one edge and corner on the other) is that my table effectively sits on top of the benches, creating a 2" "plateau" in that area.

This isn't a problem except on the occasions when family wants to join us.

I really suspect that JC installed a wrong part - - bench or table..........

Many thanks,
Bill

My 2009 25FB Classic had the exact same problem...

We had that in the 27' but without the exaggerated 'humps" in the cushions and the bed still was much lower at the head and foot and raised up in the middle area. The problem is that the hickory table is very thick and sits on top of the seat bases. In the regular side dinettes the table is narrower and sits in between the bases on a brace of wood that makes the table top even with the seat base tops. Putting something under the base cushions the same depth as the table would make the bed flat. I am thinking the difference and thickness of the hickory table is 1 1/2-2" thick. Just as Bill said. Then the thick back cushions seem to sit even a bit higher than the seats that may have compressed more with wear. I found it more advantageous to pull out the side lounge for sleeping and leave the dinette engaged if you can do without that extra sleeping space.

I'm thinking a closed cell foam pad as used to put under sleeping bags for camping could be cut to fit and take up the space, perhaps doubled for thickness. You could easily store the pieces when not in use in the wardrobe or under the bed, or insulate a storage area or door opening.

Can you swap the positions of the seat cushions and the back cushions so that the thicker back cushions are on the lower part and the thinner seat cushions are on the higher part? Could the seat cushions be flipped upside down so that the thick part would hang down over the edge of the table?

It would make the cushions of the bed not fit along the wall as well, but you'd sleep better on a level bed with irregular edges than on a bed that humps up in the middle.

One end cushion is contoured like a big letter "D" The other side next to the chair storage credenza is squared on both sides. Hmmmm. Mine was irregular, the new back cushions seem to be the same as each other whereas my short side was shorter still. Certainly worth a try! You may be right about that fitting. never thought of that! We knew it was an odd way to design the dinette bed but never actually had anyone sleep there. I set it up for my grandsons and they got spooked by the June bugs bouncing off their heads at the campfire and went in the house.

Sleepable Solution

Greetings,
Having started this thread and being appreciative of everyone's thoughts, I remain convinced that AS got a bit too fancy with the table and cushions, without adequate communication between design and building folks.

That aside, via a PM from a Forum member there is, for our unit at least, a workable solution. Similar to some of the earlier suggestions, it goes like this. Facing the table, take the left seat cushion and turn it upside down with the not so thick portion on the table. The right seat cushion is left in place and the two back cushions are "squeezed" into the middle space. The slightly lower portion on the right side can be adjusted with foam or a folded blanket.

While not a perfect solution, it creates an adequate sleeping space.

Regards,
Bill

You can't switch the cushions because the are shaped specifically to the curved walls. The only way that would be possible is to turn them upside down as well. I ain't sleeping' on that!

Judging by the age of this no one has a good solution. The brochure says my 27 Classic sleeps 6 but I don't know how on the dinette table platform. We have tried the cushions every which way yet there is no way I would sleep on that mess. The only answer appears to be two custom made seat cushions that eliminate the bumps. For what we pay for these things I expected better thought out upholstery.

Same issue, somewhat with my 2008 Classic 25fb but my cushions don't have the rolled tops but are flat. There is still a hump in the middle. Luckily we never have more than 3 traveling so I just sleep on the side couch when our daughter accompanies us.

Airstream could've designed this better. They should've made the street under dinette storage door shorter so a support could be mounted on the dinette frame. The other side doesn't have a storage door and could accept a support then cut the table smaller. I think the dinette table is too wide as it is now.
