'16 Classic Wheel Nuts

Just took possession of our new Classic. Very exciting. Was checking the unit's wheel nuts to make certain they were properly torqued having read that caution in numerous places. I fear I may have bent or somehow mis-shapen two of the nuts with the torque wrench's socket - perhaps the socket was not properly seated fully on the nut.

Have any of you had similar problems? Any ideas as to how to remove?

The nuts seems to have a soft outer cover - thinking about replacing them with a stronger nut.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Dennis

Thumbs up Welcome Aboard....

I found that a 6 point 1/2" drive socket works best in removing the cheep OEM lugs.

I replaced ours with McGard US made replacements....located right here in WNY.

Replaced the extremely cheap Airstream lug nuts with these on all three of my Airstreams which doing the tire conversions:

McGard 24138 Chrome Cone Seat Wheel Locks and McGard 64010 Chrome Bulge Cone Seat Style Lug Nuts (1/2" - 20 Thread Size) phone 800-444-5847 from Amazon

No more issues with lug nuts. I ordered spare "key sockets" directly from McGard.

Robert, thank you and others for your prompt reply. Re your recommended "6 point 1/2" drive socket", what socket size do you recommend? Metric or inch-defined. Thanks.

A 3/4" six point socket is the correct size for. !/2" drive is also the best for a heavy duty torque wrench or breaker bar.

The Airstream OEM lug nuts are especially junky. I think that they use these to compliment the junky Goodyear Marathon tires.

When I upgraded my brand new 25FB with Michelin 16" tires, I also upgraded to the McGard solid lug nuts.

In torquing my lug nuts, one of them "cracked," and I found that they are two-piece nuts: an inner, steel nut with an outer chromed cap, the latter of which split and left me unable to remove the nut. The cap easily slipped off. After a lot of experimentation, I found that the inner, steel nut was easily removed with a 18 mm, 6-point socket. The capped nuts are removed with a 3/4 inch socket. I've ordered new, one-piece nuts from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o00_s00

24 nuts for $20

Beat the socket on to the lug nuts to get them off.
Get 24 new chrome lug nuts- not the ones with the cheesy chrome cover-

Most of the replies here were very good informations, but don't forget to use a calibrated torque wrench as per proper protocol, and ensure the studs do not have any lube on them of any kind.
If you do lube the studs, be sure that you know HOW to torque them, as the lube changes the friction factor significantly. (damaged or broken studs.)

Like others who have already posted, I ended up replacing all the lug nuts with the McGard's. You most definitely do want to use a high quality torque wrench, and you'll need to recheck the torque after driving on the newly installed lug nuts -- several times -- as they will seat into the wheels. I would NOT use any lube on a lug nut. BTW, I ended up having to use a nut extractor on one of the original lug nuts. Despite my best efforts and high quality sockets, one lug nut's cheesy chrome covering simply dissolved.

Check Amazon for McGard solid lug nuts. And always use a six point socket when torqueing.
