Surge Protector Needed on 2015 Flying Cloud?

We just took delivery of our new 2015 Flying Cloud. I asked about the need for a surge protector, and was told that the FC already has one. I've read the entire manual and see no mention of a surge protector. Do I need to get one, the type that plugs in at the power source? Thanks......a real newbie here.

I do not believe they come with a surge protector. You can go with either the plug in type or hard wired type.

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone. I was reading the Q & A part of the manual today, and there was an item about surge protection. The trailer does not come equipped with it, as pointed out here on the forum. So.....looks like I'll need to buy a 50 amp model for the new Airstream (equipped with two air conditioners). That's a real bummer since I bought a 30 amp model last spring for our little Argosy. Anybody need a really nice 30 amp "Surge Guard" used on only one trip? I paid $260.00 for it at Camping World.....make me an offer if interested. Thanks

I have a Surge Guard 50 amp that I had just bought before we bought our AS with 30 amps. I would be willing to swap if you would like to do so?

GLovedahl...I would definityly look into purchasing a surge protector device. I have a 2007 Safari 25'FB and purchased mine after seeing two RV's in a state park have a power poblem that destroyed some of their equipment. I purchased the portable plug in unit from Progressive Industries model EMS-PT30C. We spend 3+ months in Florida during the winter and we normally use it every night. I decided not to use it one night this year in a RV park on our way down south and it was extremly cold and the voltage in the RV dropped due to the amount of electric heaters being used. We noticed when we got down to Florida that the 120v A/C section of our original equipment power converter died and the refrigerator would not work on gas anymore. I had to replace both the lower section of the power converter and replace the electronics board in the refrigerator. If I used the Progressive unit that night it would have disconnected me from the 120V A/C power source due to low voltage and saved me a lot of money.

Surge Protectors

I bought a 30 AMP when we bought our new 2013 27' FC, mainly after reading the information provided by the manufacturer. They paint a pretty grim picture if you don't have one. I used it religiously on every trip, and we took many, and never, ever encountered a situation where I needed it. Was I just lucky? I just purchased a new 2015 30' FC Bunk and was not going to get another surge protector.

We were told to buy a "source" surge protector for our 2014 19 ft Flying Cloud. I also wondered why one was not already installed, if needed. Keeping the surge limited to the site, prior to delivery into the system may have some advantage (?). It'll be interesting to read the answers to your question. Dave

Smile Your 30 amp Surge Protector

We are interested in purchasing your 30amp surge protector. How much do you want for it? We live on the east side of Dallas (relatively close to you).

Surge Protector Needed on 2015 Flying Cloud?

Is having one of these actually that big a deal? Or is this just another item to spend $$ on and never really have a need for?

I know of several people that had their electronics fried. A surge protector would have prevented that. It only takes one time.

Okay so this is a MUST BUY item. I note without knowing anything about this that there seems to be a huge difference is pricing on say a 30amp size, is there good surge protectors and others not so good?
Thanks once again
Doug

After reading reviews and researching I ended up going with Surge Guard. I have been pleased with it. Think of it as an insurance policy.

The inexpensive units (<$150 approx) protect against power surge only, while the more expensive units protect against surge and high or low voltage variation. These can go from $200 to $500+.
