Selling our 2012 Flying Cloud 30' Sofa for 2015 Bunkhouse

Well, I foolishly stopped by Woodland Travel Center yesterday on my day off. They had a 2014 30' Bunkhouse on the lot that they are interested in selling, and the dealer convinced me to take a look, since we have 4 daughters. Honestly, if Airstream had produced the bunkhouse in 2012, we'd probably own it!

However, I started looking/comparing to the 2015 models, and ducted air looks pretty nice; especially when you consider air flow distribution in a 30' trailer when people are sleeping in both front and rear bedrooms with curtains closed.

We have solar/inverter on ours, and would be adding these options to a new model, as well as the awning package.

Any thoughts on what price difference I should expect between a new 2015 FC Bunkhouse vs. a 2014? What I should be able to get out of my 2012?

A lot depends upon how much of a hurry you are in to make a deal ... certainly the dealer will take it in on trade, but an outright sale will net more. In our case, we would rather let the dealer make a bit on a trade-in deal and not have the hassle of selling directly. YMMV

I agree, and I have a good relationship with our dealer...

We have 5 daughters and have had our bunkhouse since new back in 06. It is awesome, so much storage and functional space. One of the best floorplans AS has ever had. We have the rear lower queen and curbside chairs.

Well, I broke down today and ordered a 2015 FC Bunkhouse 30FB.
Dual AC units, inverter, awning package, cashew interior with dark counters and golden knight decor.
All of this because the salesman invited my two youngest daughters to see the inside of a "bunkhouse"!

My dealer is putting on a higher end after market inverter instead of the standard 1000 watt that AS provides. Any suggestions? He says 1500 or higher is easier and higher quality....

I'm also ordering another Wilson LTE Signal Booster for my Verizon Wi-Fi Jetpack. I had the antenna mounted on the roof with the bracket/cradle mounted inside above the stereo. It worked WONDERFULLY well....

Having just taken delivery of my 2015 Serenity 30RB, two A/C, power awnings, recliners, I understand the excitement. I think you will find the new unit much improved especially in the HVAC department.
Also, as I use the Verizon Jet Pack, I will investigate the booster antenna you have mentioned. Thanks

Msmoto, how do you like the power awnings? Do you have all power awnings, or just the longer side awnings?

Here's the link to the Wilson signal booster:

Wilson Sleek 4G Universal SmarTech III Cell Phone/Hotspot Cradle Signal Booster - 460107 [700/800/1900/1700/2100mhz], 132 Reviews : 3Gstore.com

NOTE: it is on sale through July 12 for ($139.99 $40 off!) and shipping is only $5.

I had the dealer mount the antenna to the roof with aircraft adhesive and drill/fill/seal a hole to run the coax into the interior of the Airstream. I then mounted the cradle to the cabinet just above the stereo (it comes with an adhesive swivel bracket). This allowed me to plug the DC power plug into the outlet that is right above the DVD player.

Every time we are in the airstream, I just pull my Verizon Jetpack out of my briefcase and pop it into the cradle. Voila! Instant wi-fi throughout the trailer.

This works so well for two reasons:
1. It gets the reception OUTSIDE of the trailer by mounting the antenna on the roof.
2. The cradle boosts the signal from the cellphone/jetpack/etc.

I almost always have full signal now (4+ bars) and never use campground wi-fi. It allows me to use my laptop, iPad, phone, etc. all at the same time. My wife also usually has her laptop connected too. We are even able to use our AppleTV in the Airstream to watch movies from iTunes or Amazon Prime.

As far as I know, the only power awning available is the passenger side 20' long awning. The small rear and road side awnings do not come powered.
To fold a manual awning requires about two to five minutes. To fold the power awning requires as long as it takes to push the button one time....one second. Meanwhile I can be doing the rest of the awnings or other chores. So, the convenience is the advantage. Also, no requirement to lock it in place. Once rolled up one is ready to travel. My first road trip will be in about five days, during which time I will fully test out the new Serenity.

Hibby, I am a first time Airstream forum user. I found you because I am looking to buy an airstream big enough to travel for a year with 4 people. The flying cloud is the one that keeps coming onto my radar. I see you have 4 kids. How was the size of your flying cloud for that many people? The bunkhouse, no doubt, has great bed space already manufactured. I don't mind doing a big of renovating....so I'm wondering if I could see pictures of your flying cloud (the non bunkhouse) and if you'd be interested in selling it privately?
Thanks.

Kira,

So sorry for the delayed response! I haven't been on the forums during the last month or so because I was out shoveling snow... I did already sell the 2012 30' FC back in September, but I can still share some opinions.

We loved it, but admittedly with four kids, they didn't enjoy the sofa for sleeping (it was a bit uncomfortable) and the drop dinette was OK but no one ever had a place to put their stuff. I even tried sleeping on the sofa on a couple of occasions myself (don't ask) and it was a restless night.

The bunkhouse is much better for four kids, and the beds at the back end up being a great place for all the kids to throw their bags & packs so their out of the way when not needed.
