Recliners to replace sofa

Has anyone replaced the sofa with two recliners?

We are experienced RVers and have learned that RV sofas are not comfortable for us for more than a few minutes, but recliners are perfect for hours. So, for the Airstream we are considering... we're going to have to get or convert to recliners.

I know that the 2015 International 30 and Flying Cloud 30 have recliner options and we're considering those, but they're hard to find. So, I was wondering if converting from a sofa model to two aftermarket recliners is a viable option. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts on this?

We're looking at 30' 2015 models and it seems that there are no components under the sofas that would need to be moved, if converting to recliners? Is this true and does it apply to the slightly shorter models as well?

Check the interior restoration and remodeling threads on here. A lot of us have done that conversion, it can be simple, or very complicated, your choice. I just finished an interior remodel of a 1996, 34' Excella 1000.

If you are doing your own work, it would help to have a fairly well equipped shop.

I've done it twice. Simple fix to uncomfortable couches. Now have a 2015 which we ordered with AS recliners. If you do it look for the narrowest, wall hugger you are comfortable in. Simply remove the interior you no longer want and install the recliners. In our 25' I did not fasten to the floor, but secured them with a bungy cord while moving. On our other 30' I screwed them into the floor. In both cases when we sold the units I put the original interior back in.

The secret is finding the right recliner that will not only fit in your Airstream without taking up all of the room in the living area but also to fit through the door. You will never miss the old back breaker couch. Here are some pics of interior of my 1976 Sovereign including the 2 wall away recliners. These fairly small footprint recliners that don't take up a lot of room and the fold up tables on both sides still work as well.

Our trailer was converted at JC for the original owner. The only thing that doesn't work well is eating while seated in the recliners. If you can find some that don't rock or lock out the rocker mechanism that would be better than trying to eat off of tv trays with the chair rocked back which happens as soon as you sit in it.

Good to know that we're not alone in finding the sofas to be terrible to sit on for more than about 2 minutes.

I looked under the sofa on a 2015 International 30' and didn't see any battery boxes or equipment that would have to be moved. Where does Airstream put the battery boxes on these new units? Looked like they might be under the side closet?

Just to give you an idea what we did on our previous 25' International. The recliner is made for RVs with a width of 25". It was previously in our 35' Nu-Way Premier 5th wheel. there were two in her in addition to the couch. We relocated the recliner to our living room and then to the AS when we made the changes with the flip top replacing the original table. When we sold the 25' this was a big plus for the buyer. Our 30' Classic has the couch and we love it. The PO changed the foam and replaced it with much firmer and I would not think about replacing and loosing the ability to use as a bed for the possibility of extra sleeping space.

I used two recliners from a theater room I had in my home. You're so right about functionality - these are a huge improvement for us.

Cheers,
John

Did Airstream move the batteries and aux. equipment away from under the front sofa to somewhere else on the trailer, on the 2015 30 footers?

We have a 30' 2015 FC, batteries are outside on the tongue behind the propane bottles in a metal box. Were on our 2010 25' as well.

I switched from a 25 Cloud to a 30 Cloud for that very reason. They are working exceptionally well. Along with the fold up table in front of the recliners is almost like adding another room to your Stream. Totally comfortable.

We replaced our kitchen table/sofa on our 78 Argosy with 2 Lane swivel recliners with ottomans and have truly enjoyed them. Yes you do lose the eating table but we eat outside most of the time and if we eat inside we just use some plastic eating trays or go out to dinner.

Noted question about getting recliners through door in AS.

Most recliners come with detachable backs - they are shipped that way - at least on the last 6 I have bought. They go through the Airstream door on their sides and you attach the back inside - takes two people to get through, one on the inside and one outside.

Also - about eating on them - the ones I bought the last time had a swing out and removable table built-in (they were made especially for trailers) to the arm rest - works great.

The last ones have the recliner lever on the inside of the arm rest so you can put them against the wall or bookcase which is neat in a narrow trailer.
